In an attempt to increase communication between the Associated Students of Madison and student organizations and improve campus climate in general, ASM confirmed the appointment of its diversity liaison Thursday evening during its bi-weekly meeting.
The liaison will address any diversity issues concerning UW-Madison students.
Jesse Kiley, a UW-Madison senior majoring in women's studies and Afro-American studies, filled the position after it was vacant for approximately three months.
According to ASM Diversity Committee Co-Chair Jennifer Epps, last night's appointment was important for the organization as a whole.
\Historically in student government, people of color, women and queers have not been represented,"" she said.
ASM's nomination board had been looking for a student of color to fill the position for a while but had not found exactly the person they wanted until they interviewed Kiley, Epps added.
""We're just very excited to have him on the committee,"" she said. ""Overall, he has floored me with his ideas.""
ASM Chair Jessica Miller expressed similar sentiments.
""That's awesome that we're finally hiring someone,"" Miller said.
