A patch intended to help women prevent pregnancy will appear in drugstores soon, following its approval by the Food and Drug Administration Tuesday.
The Ortho-Evra patch, manufactured by Ortho-McNeil, emits similar hormones into the skin as those found in birth control pills.
Supporters of Ortho-Evra praise the patch as less invasive and more convenient than traditional birth control. The patch is used weekly, unlike birth control pills, which are consumed on a daily basis.

The patch will be available next year by prescription, at a cost proportionate to that of birth control pills, approximately $40 a month.
The FDA recommends application of the patch to the abdominal or upper body region.
