Students to rally against voting bill in Assembly hearing

The Associated Students of Madison will lead a group of students to the Assembly Parlor in the State Capitol today at 10 a.m. to contest a bill that, if passed, could possibly affect the voting rights of students.

A hearing will be held for the bill, labeled AB 259, that would require citizens to vote at the location listed on their valid Wisconsin Driver's License or Wisconsin Department of Transportation photo I.D.

State representatives proposed the bill in response to high voter turnout in some districts in the last election. An ASM press advisory said this occurred after voters abused the vouching privilege currently in place, voting more than once in several different precincts.

Currently, the state of Wisconsin has a same-day registration policy. However, if AB259 is passed, students whose driver's licenses do not have their Madison address on it would not be able to vote in the Madison area.
