Rep. Ron Kind, D-LaCrosse, announced Monday that he would not enter the Wisconsin governor's race, leaving four other Democrats to battle it out for the chance to face Republican Gov. Scott McCallum in November 2002.
Kind attributed his decision to the change in the country's direction after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York City, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.
'I have always said that being governor of my home state would be a great honor and even greater responsibility, but in light of the tragic events of Sept. 11, it is more appropriate for me to focus all my energies to the great challenges that lie before our country,' Kind said in a statement.
