The Wisconsin Badgers men’s hockey program is often lauded as one of the best developmental programs in the country with many former Badgers littered through the ranks of the NHL, as players and coaches alike. In the last few weeks, the strength of that development was highlighted at the World Junior Championship in Edmonton, Canada, where three Badgers– Cole Caufield, Alex Turcotte and Dylan Hollaway– all took home medals for their respective teams.

The No. 8 Badgers (3-1 Big Ten, 9-2 overall) could tie Illinois for second in the Big Ten tonight as they take on the Indiana Hoosiers (2-2 Big Ten, 7-4 overall) in the Kohl Center. The Badgers will be playing their first game in 2021 due to the cancellation of Sunday’s contest at Penn State.

After having to postpone their last six games because of injuries and a COVID-19 breakout within the team, the University of Wisconsin-Madison women’s hockey team (1-1-0) recently announced an updated schedule for the second half of their season. First up for the Badgers is a series on the road against Minnesota State (2-5-1) this weekend.

The No. 6 Badgers (3-1 Big Ten, 9-2 overall) bid adieu to 2020 by running the No. 21 Minnesota Golden Gophers (2-2 Big Ten, 9-2 overall) out of the Kohl Center by a score of 71-59. Gard’s squad was able to almost entirely shut down Minnesota’s offense including star point guard Marcus Carr, who scored 10 points on 11 field goals.

Quarterback Jack Coan is entering the transfer portal and will be leaving the Wisconsin Football program, Coan and the team announced early last week. After a foot injury sidelined the junior for the first two months of the season, Coan did not play at any point during the 2020 regular season — even after being activated prior to a week eight matchup against No. 16 Iowa.

You could say that the ninth-ranked Badgers (2-0 Big Ten, 8-1 overall) would not be going Home Alone without a win in their pocket. You could say that the Badgers seniors delivered like some Christmas Mail (yes, that’s a real movie). Or, you could keep it simple, and say that the Badgers took down the Spartans by a score of 85-76 to snap their 12-game losing streak at the Breslin Center.

It took a while for Wisconsin to get going in their Big Ten opener against Nebraska Tuesday night — but thanks to a 16-0 run in the second half, the Badgers were able to take down the Cornhuskers by a final of 67-53.

Well folks, the 6-1 Wisconsin Badgers managed to make it through their seven non-conference games relatively unscathed, save for a heartbreaker in Milwaukee. In these games the veteran squad has proven themselves as a team that, as every college basketball pundit has put it, “won’t beat themselves.” But now, the truly challenging part of the schedule begins: conference play.

The storied history of the Wisconsin and Minnesota rivalry dates back all the way to 1890. After a brief one year hiatus in 1906 due to then-President Roosevelet suspending all college football in light of safety concerns, the rivalry game has been played every season since, making it the longest continuously played rivalry game in the history of college football. Entering Saturday, Wisconsin leads the series 61-60-8.

The Badgers (5-1) will remain at the Kohl Center Saturday afternoon to finally complete their leg of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge as they take on the Louisville Cardinals (4-0) at noon. The Cardinals come to Madison in the wake of the Badgers’ victory over Loyola-Chicago by a score of 77-63.
