ARLINGTON, VA. — Wisconsin’s trip to the nation’s capital was supposed to serve as a chance for a pair of additional non-conference games, as well as continue head coach Mark Johnson’s tradition of playing neutral site games in areas without a women’s collegiate program.

Coming into this season, the Badgers felt like they had a legitimate shot to win a national championship. A big reason for those high expectations: incoming graduate transfer goaltender Kyle Hayton.

Coming into this season, many thought the Big Ten was going to primarily be a five-team race between Minnesota, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Penn State. Accordingly, Michigan and Michigan State, after poor seasons last year, were largely considered outcasts with little chance to make an impact in a deep conference.

In the middle of the season, it is a common theme for coaches to dissect how a team is playing potentially above tangible results. Specifically, it is possible to grow from a game and build some good habits even in a loss. Still, at some point, if you want to be an elite team, the results have to be there.

The top-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey (16-0-0) team continued its perfect season this weekend with a sweep of the then-No. 7 Cornell Big Red. Wisconsin is off to its second best start in school history, only behind the 2015-’16 team’s eighteen consecutive wins to start the season. The Badgers were mainly led by the play of forwards Sophia Shaver and Presley Norby this weekend. It was their efforts that propelled Wisconsin to its fifth and sixth straight wins against ranked opponents.

For the third week in a row, the Wisconsin women’s hockey team is facing a ranked opponent. After sweeping No. 4 Ohio State last weekend (now ranked No. 5) by a combined score of 10-1, the No. 1 Badgers (14-0-0) travel to Ithaca, N.Y., this weekend to take on #7 Cornell (3-1-0).

It’s not easy being a freshman collegiate athlete. Even if you’ve figured out your classes and practice schedule and gotten adjusted to the level of competition, there’s still any number of little things that can trip you up and get you off your game.

In our first Cardinal Zone Hockey Podcast of the season, sports editor Ben Pickman is joined by sports editor Ethan Levy and men’s hockey beat writer Cameron Lane-Flehinger as the trio breaks down the start of Wisconsin’s season. They then discuss Kyle Hayton’s importance to the Badgers and the culture that head coach Tony Granato has created.

The undefeated, No. 1-ranked Badgers (8-0-0 Big Ten, 14-0-0 overall) wrapped up another perfect weekend, defeating, and therefore sweeping, No. 4 Ohio State (5-2-1, 7-2-1) by a final score of 3-1. The Badgers played a nearly flawless game, shutting down Ohio State’s offensive attack and putting nearly constant pressure on the Buckeyes defense all game.

Over the course of this season, Wisconsin has played seven different freshmen, and five of those first-year players have been in the lineup for all 11 games so far. Between quarterbacking the powerplay, playing on the penalty kill and being on the ice in close games as time ticks down, this freshman class has had a tremendous impact on Wisconsin’s season thus far.

In a 7-0 drubbing of the No.4 Ohio State Buckeyes (7-1-1, 5-1-1-1 WCHA), the No. 1 Wisconsin Badgers (13-0-0, 7-0-0 WCHA) put on a clinic. Six different players scored and thirteen players had a point in what was arguably the Badgers’ most impressive win of the season.

The third line on a hockey team is sometimes the most critical, and is often the most overlooked. The first two lines are on the ice to score, while the fourth-liners are tasked with bringing energy and grit. Third-line forwards often have to play both roles, and the teams whose third lines do it best typically win.

The still undefeated No. 1 Badgers (12-0-0) are returning home this weekend for a series with No. 4 Ohio State (7-0-1) after sweeping No. 7 Minnesota last weekend. The Buckeyes will look to build on their near-perfect record with their only blemish being a 5-5 tie which ended in a 2-0 shootout win for Ohio State.

For the first time since 2010, the Kohl Center will be hosting a top-ten men’s hockey matchup. The No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers, for the first time in three years, have cracked the top-10 of the USCHO poll after a couple of seasons rebuilding a largely storied program. Despite the dominance of the Wisconsin program, No. 4 North Dakota (5-2-1) has been arguably even more historic, developing players like Chicago Blackhawk Jonathan Toews. With probably the most anticipated game in recent memory coming to the Kohl Center, UW is feeling a great deal of mixed emotions regarding the elite matchup.

The No. 1 Wisconsin Badgers (6-0-0-0 WCHA, 12-0-0 overall) continued their undefeated season this weekend against archrival Minnesota Golden Gophers ( 4-3-1-0 ,5-4-1) in the Twin Cities, extending their record on the year to 12-0-0. In two tight games, the Badgers bested the No. 6 Golden Gophers 3-2 and 2-1, with the second needing overtime for a decision. It was the first time that Wisconsin has swept Minnesota in an away series since 2007.

Call it a letdown, call it a hangover. Whatever its name, the Wisconsin men’s hockey team (1-1-0 Big Ten, 6-3-0 overall) experienced it Saturday night against St. Lawrence (0-0-0 ECAC, 1-7-0 overall) in a 6-3 loss that left players and coaches grasping for answers.
(10/28/17 4:32am)
Simply put, the Badgers dominated St. Lawrence in the opening game of their weekend series. Ultimately, Wisconsin outshot the SLU 42-19 — which is an impressive margin — but, more shockingly, UW recorded 84 shot attempts to the Saints’ 40.

The No. 1 Badgers (10-0-0) are heading to Ridder Arena in Minnesota to play the No. 6 Golden Gophers (5-2-1) this weekend, after a sweep Bemidji State at home. Minnesota is coming off a weekend where it swept No. 8 Minnesota Duluth, and moved up a spot in the USCHO poll.
