The Broadway hit musical “Something Rotten!” stopped in Madison at part of the Overture Center’s Broadway at the Overture series. Set in 1595, the comedy tells the story of Nick and Nigel Bottom, two brothers looking to write a play bigger than that of their rival: William Shakespeare himself. When a local soothsayer predicts that the future of theater is singing, dancing and acting all at once, Nick and Nigel attempt to write the world’s very first musical. The Daily Cardinal sat down with Richard Spitaletta, the show’s Nigel Bottom, to hear about touring life, the casting process and his worst audition ever.

“Something Rotten!” stunned and delighted a packed crowd at the Overture Center on Oct. 9. The musical comedy kept audience members smiling by not taking itself too seriously. The one thing the show was lacking? Lead women.

Madison is a hub of culture when it comes to the arts — concerts, art shows and poetry slams can be found every weekend. Few realize, however, that Madison also hosts dozens of theater performances, from Broadway tours to local productions. Here’s your guide for what to keep an eye out for this fall.

Expectations were high as I waited outside of the Orpheum Theater last Wednesday, excited to see what Mat Kearney would perform for his stop in Madison. His last album, Just Kids came out in 2015 and his last well-known hit, “Ships in the Night” dropped nearly eight years ago. I was curious to see what Kearney’s performance would unveil and I was pleasantly surprised — though he has new music, the same relaxed and upbeat songs were still there.

Most people know Walk the Moon from their acclaimed, overplayed pop hit “Shut Up and Dance.” If you don’t know the tune, you must have done a pretty good job at avoiding every radio station for the past four years.

I entered The Bartell Theater a little before four o’clock on a Sunday afternoon. The local theater looked like everything you’d imagine it would: a modest waiting room with a family of welcoming, eager staff and an intimate black box theater for the main event. I glanced over to a slightly ajar door that revealed a cast member preparing his lines for his upcoming performance of the Shakespeare play, “Henry IV.” This play reflects a different side of Shakespeare’s writings, focusing on a rebellion and allowing for love stories to take a backseat. For those who have not spent their free time immersing themselves in Shakespeare’s works, “Henry IV” mainly revolves around two plots that eventually intersect with one pivotal battle. One plot surrounds King Henry IV, Prince Hal and Prince Harry while the other focuses on the Percys, a family of noblemen, who want to rebel against the king for refusing to pay his debt.

The Forward Theater Company kicked off its ninth annual season with Lauren Gunderson’s “I and You” at the Overture Center’s Playhouse Theater. The play opened on Thursday, Nov. 2 and will run until Nov. 19 and, trust me, this is a show you do not want to miss.

Piano Concerto always makes a scene. The orchestra and the pianist both give all of what they have to each other in the arena — they cooperate, speak and challenge each other. The audience can take advantage of getting the best of the two protagonists that own equal partnership between each other, enjoying the exciting feast of the two hard players in the game.

The only person who could possibly feel themselves while wearing a sweater in the balmy heat of this confused Wisconsin weather is none other than empowering Midwest-raised rapper, Lizzo. Entering the stage wearing a fuzzy red heart on her chest, she went full-force from the beginning to end of her set, belting near-flawless anthems of feminism and body positivity.

Folk artists Gregory Alan Isakov and Blind Pilot teamed up Tuesday to serenade a small but packed Capitol Theater. Although both artists showed what they were capable of with soft yet powerful acoustic sound, I was most impressed by the incredible talent that Gregory Alan Isakov brought to the stage.

Movie-going experiences are abundant at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For generations, students, staff and community members have had the opportunity to enjoy “Big Screen” entertainment. The medium’s landscape has changed, remodeled and adjusted along with the campus and city, and while some venues no longer exist, new ones emerged, creating the film community we see now.
