Never fear, rock 'n' roll isn't dead yet

Bitching about the current state of the music industry has been cool ever since punk-rock broke through in the mid-1970s, probably even before then, but it hit the mainstream with CBGB's and the Ramones. I even used to be one of those people, and I guess I still am a little, but when really looking at it, the music industry is almost in better shape now than it has been in the last ten years.

'Tuba Atlantic' an Oscar Short favorite

Last week at Sundance Cinemas in Madison I witnessed a Norwegian teenage girl engage in a seagull-killing rampage with a heavy machine gun, a neurotic time machine inventor succumb to his OCD and spend a year trying to make one rather unremarkable day in his life perfect, two Irish estranged boyhood best friends reunite after 25 years, a young German couple become embroiled in a secret child-abduction ring after adopting a young Indian boy in Kolkata and a young Irish lad brazenly defy the Catholic church in the name of his one true love-football.

Broken iPod resurrects lost tunes

I owe the powers that be a great big thank you for my broken iPod screen. Normally, this would be the bane of my existence, forcing me to turn on the clicker so that I can discern where I am in my list of artists. But lately it has been better at figuring out the perfect tunes for whatever mood I might be in than I am.

Men's Hockey: Not done yet, ready for senior night

The past few weekends haven't gone as planned for the Wisconsin men's hockey team (7-13-2 WCHA, 12-14-2 overall). The Badgers have dropped four straight games and as a result, find themselves well outside their goal of securing home ice advantage for the WCHA playoffs.

No more goody two shoes

Rooney Mara's turn as Swedish author Stieg Larsson's pierced, tattoo-clad, anti-social Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's American film adaptation of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" this past December proved to be thoroughly enthralling-enough even to land her a nomination for Best Actress at the 2012 Academy Awards later this month. While Swedish actress Noomi Rapace got the first crack at the character in the Danish film adaptations of Larsson's Millennium trilogy, Mara managed to do the character better justice in her portrayal by imbuing the ass-kicking, name-taking Salander with the undertone of vulnerability that was missing from Rapace's pure bad ass. Although this thread of humanity that Mara brings to the role certainly complicates the character of Lisbeth Salander, there is no doubt that she qualifies as the archetypal anti-hero, a trope that is becoming more and more common in our culture.

Women's Hockey: Wisconsin faces St. Cloud State in final road series

With the regular season coming to a close, the Wisconsin women's hockey team (20-2-2 WCHA, 26-2-2 overall) knows its weekend series against St. Cloud State 4-20-0, 5-23-2) will be the last time it has a guaranteed a road game. After this weekend, if the Badgers are to play away from home they will need to earn their tickets to Duluth, Minn., for two weekends: the WCHA Final Face-Off and the NCAA Frozen Four.

Living Statues rock the Frequency

Local rocker Tommy Shears took some time out of his T.S. Eliot reading to tell me about his latest project, The Living Statues, which has been a band years in the making. They are playing this Thursday, Feb. 9, at the Frequency with other local boys Baristacide and Fight Nice of Chicago.

He's got the whole world in his hands

There has been a recent uptick in the number of foreign bands I listen to. Not because I'm anti-American music-I've got plenty of that too-but because I've found or been introduced to some amazing foreign musicians that I think deserve a little love.

It's a pirate life for me

Blockbuster, Hollywood Videos, and other such brick-and-mortar video rental providers have been closing up shop in droves across the country over the past few years, simply out-competed by newer, more convenient entertainment providers like Netflix and Redbox. But the transition from these fading entertainment elites to the new generation has gone anything but smoothly thanks to meddling movie studios.

Hassle-free albums worth the money

The SOPA and PIPA controversies have been on every music-lover's mind, and it was a relief to many when the legislation was dropped. However, it does leave us with questions that will inevitably effect us in the future, as the issues that SOPA and PIPA attempted to address are far from being byone woes.

'You don't like me, you really don't like me,' Oscars 2012

By mid afternoon on the day of Oscar nomination announcements last week, my Facebook wall was already being covered with bitter and exasperated commentary on the Academy's nominee choices for the 2012 Academy Awards. One commenter summed up his displeasure with the concise statement, "This was a terrible year in film."
