What is most disappointing about ""The Invention of Lying,"" the
latest comedy by Ricky Gervais, creator of ""The Office"" and
""Extras,"" is that it comes so close to being as brilliant as its
premise. Gervais' protagonist, Mark Bellison, lives in a world
where people never developed the ability to lie. The result is a
society without mistrust, without fiction and without that which
becomes the focal point of the plot: religion. The idea that
religion cannot exist in an exclusively truthful world is both
subversive and fascinating, but unfortunately the concept is never
fully fleshed out.

I had the pleasure of visiting with my grandparents two weeks
back when the topic of disparities in generational responsibility
was broached. Now, I have always been fascinated by this topic,
constantly inquiring about methods to increase societal
responsibility. Does it start with family values or fiscal
competency? What happened to the solid nuclear family where life
lessons were taught and reinforced within the family? The
traditional family unit and individual accountability is
disappearing in the United States through the removal of familial
responsibility and creation of an entitlement complex.

Diet-themed magazine articles, television advertisements for

The University of Wisconsin olled out the red carpet"" last
Saturday, unveiling a new initiative that was supposed to create a
friendlier environment to opposing fans at Badger football games.
In response to several incidents of harassment that occurred last
season, the Athletic Department and the administration created this
initiative to make fans of teams visiting Camp Randall feel safe
and welcome. Throughout the stadium area, volunteer ""fan
ambassadors"" wearing green shirts helped fans of visiting Central
Florida find their way in a sea of Badger red. The plan did a good
job of diminishing some of the more vulgar behavior normally
associated with football games while generally maintaining the
environment inside the stadium we have all come to enjoy.
Unfortunately, Roll Out the Red Carpet fails to curb the more
dangerous and unwanted behavior outside the stadium; the behavior
that the administration should be most concerned with stamping out.
