The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team (3-1-0 WCHA,
5-1-0 overall) will play its first games outside the friendly

Wisconsin is not a state traditionally known for producing music of
national prominence, though there have been a few notable
exceptions. Steve Miller was a hero of mid-70s rock FM radio,
Wisconsin's laid-back ambassador to a format vice-gripped by mythic
Detroit-bred elbow sleaze-grease. A decade later, the Violent
Femmes had their solid one-album run as New Weird America's
sex-starved, eager vanguard. Now, one name on the national scene
evokes Wisconsin.

Coming into Thursday's first-round match at the Big Ten Tournament,
Illinois averaged just 40 percent shooting from the field this
season—10th in the Big Ten. That stat didn't bother the Illini too
much, though.

Despite professing a lack of details about UW-Madison's
relationship with the state at three student forums, a drafted
letter obtained by The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel revealed
Wednesday that Chancellor Biddy Martin advocated for the
university's separation from the UW system, and knew it was
likely.

Despite returning three starters and 12 letter-winners from last
year's 24-9 squad, much of the pre-season focus has been on the

Back in ninth grade English class, my teacher Mrs. Stocks-Glover
drew a triangular plot diagram on the chalkboard. The linguistic
geometry lesson had one fundamental point—all great stories have a
beginning, a climax and an end. That last bit—the end—is something
that TV series seem to screw up on a regular basis.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - In some games all it takes is one player
finding a rhythm to completely change the complexion of the
contest. In Saturday's in-state bout between Marquette and
Wisconsin, that one player was most certainly not wearing red.

Rugby - the word alone generates a vivid image of crazed men
throwing their battered, bloody bodies into piles of humanity and
chaos.

A sports columnist stands in an office overlooking Camp Randall
Stadium. To his right lies a jacuzzi complete with 14 pulsating
jets. To his left sits a mini bar stocked with Crown Royal, Grey
Goose and some type of wine with a French name the young pundit
cannot pronounce.

All sports legends are supposed to exit the field in the same
way. Like the heroes of old Westerns, they ride into the sunset
after the final battle, their glory forever etched in the minds of
their adoring fans.

After posting the lowest score on the team at the Susie Maxwell

It was a warm, sunny Southern morning - the kind where the smell
of blooming magnolias seemed to float on the breeze like the songs
of a Gospel choir during a Sunday service.

A slimy stream of orange vomit slides slowly down a staircase.
Slurred four-letter words fight out of drunken mouths and hang in
the air among indecipherable shouts and groans. An inebriated man
in handcuffs yells something about bovine manure as policemen drag
his bulky, bumbling body through a crowd of dazed onlookers.

On the shores of Lake Mendota, UW student athletes train, sweat
and compete just like their counterparts on the Kohl Center court
and Camp Randall gridiron.
