As the weather outside gets frightful, the jumpers of Dekker and Kaminsky will be oh so delightful. That’s right folks, the college basketball season is a little over a week away from starting, and Wisconsin is near the top of the preseason rankings.
Finally, it’s the moment we have all been waiting for, the first edition of Shad’s College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings of the season.
With the NBA season barely a week away from starting, it’s everyone’s favorite time of the year: prediction season! Now it’s my turn to make semi-educated guesses about the NBA before any actual action has taken place. Today I’ll look at the top five MVP candidates for the upcoming year.
When Oklahoma City Thunder “point guard” Russell Westbrook woke up to the news that his superstar teammate and reigning MVP Kevin Durant had a Jones fracture in his foot that could sideline him for approximately two months, the tune of LMFAO’s “Shots!” rang through Westbrook’s head, except the shots he was dreaming of were a little different than what is being referenced in the song.
Madison, we have a problem. For the first time in distant memory, that problem is the Wisconsin Badgers’ offense. It looked anemic in a 20-14 loss at Northwestern, breaking a streak of 17 straight games of 20 or more points.
With the end of September at our doorstep, midterm season is starting up (boo) as well as Big Ten conference play (yay?). Here are five things we learned about our begrudgingly beloved conference in this tumultuous month.
If someone had come up to me before the NFL season and told me that the Packers’ offense would be holding them back, I would have said, “Sure, it also looks like hell is about to freeze over.”
The Big Ten is all but guaranteed to not have a team in the new College Football Playoff (cue the muffled sobbing sound from the Midwest). More surprisingly, the SEC might not have a representative in the Playoff either this January.
This past Saturday afternoon, when Marin Cilic rocketed a forehand winner down the line past a defeated Roger Federer to secure a spot in the U.S. Open men’s tennis final against Kei Nishikori, a stat popped onto the TV screen that made my jaw hit the floor.
Unlike pro sports, the head coach in college athletics is far and away the most important person in the program. While some head coaches in the big leagues carry the dual title of GM and head coach, every head coach in the preps has to be both.
If reports from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel are correct, redshirt junior Tanner McEvoy will be the starting quarterback for the Wisconsin Badgers when their season opens in Houston. McEvoy and the incumbent redshirt junior Joel Stave have been locked into a heated quarterback battle for the past month now, but it appears that McEvoy has emerged as the winner. If it is true, head coach Gary Andersen will be taking a huge risk, but one that is right for the Badgers.
Spring is a season that marks change to the landscape, climate, and most importantly, Wisconsin football.
If there are two things that one can always count on, it is a bitter Wisconsin winter and a strong Wisconsin Badgers rushing attack.
Late turnovers doom Iowa at home as Badgers win 28-9
While the No. 4 Badger offense yet again has an excellent rushing attack, a very pleasant surprise this season has been the effectiveness of the vertical passing game. Sophomore quarterback Joel Stave has been lights out, especially to redshirt senior wide receiver Jared Abbrederis. The two have been a dynamite duo on the deep ball, connecting for nine passes of over 40 yards, five of which have gone for touchdowns.
Third time’s the charm on the road for Gary Andersen and his Badgers (3-1 Big Ten, 5-2 overall). After losing two close road games earlier in the year to Arizona State and No. 4 Ohio State, No. 22 Wisconsin earned its first road win of the season by routing Illinois (0-2, 3-3) 56-32 in Champaign, Ill.
The next stop for No. 25 Wisconsin’s offensive machine is Champaign, Ill., where it will face Illinois this Saturday. The team is coming off an explosive performance over Northwestern at Camp Randall, where it put up 35 points in a rout of the then No. 19 Wildcats.
Wisconsin football (1-1 Big Ten, 3-2 overall) is back this weekend. After taking last week off with a bye, the Badgers welcome No. 19 Northwestern (0-1, 4-1) this Saturday for Wisconsin’s homecoming game.
There was nothing confusing or controversial about No. 24 Wisconsin’s lopsided 41-10 victory over Purdue Saturday.
