As New Year’s Day draws near, so concludes an excellent year for arts and entertainment. 2023 gave us many great films, music, games and stunning television, and historic advancements in labor rights for Hollywood writers and actors as a result of strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WAG) and the Screen Actors Guild — American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) during “hot labor summer.”

The new Star Wars streaming show “Ahsoka,” produced by John Bartnicki and written by Dave Filoni, serves as a perfect encapsulation of recent Star Wars television: action-packed and fun yet familiar and risk-averse. This show will certainly be a fan favorite, but its reliance on familiar themes is indicative of larger trends which weaken the franchise as a whole.

Since the critically acclaimed first season of “The Mandalorian'' debuted on Disney Plus in late 2019, succeeding Star Wars shows have fallen into a familiar pattern — overindulgent cameos, mediocre writing and artificial sets. I assumed showrunner Tony Gilroy’s 2022 show “Andor'' would be much the same — imagine my excitement when I was proven wrong.
