Like a lot of Canadians, sophomore forward Carolyne Prevost and
junior forward Mallory Deluce feel a great sense of national pride
during the Vancouver Olympics and want to see their country do
well. Unlike a lot of their countrymen, however, Prevost and Deluce
have some close ties to players on the other side of a border that
divides two countries and creates one of the best rivalries in
hockey.

It's time for me to level with you, dear reader: I really don't
know a damn thing about the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

After scoring six goals with a man advantage against Minnesota
State last weekend, the Wisconsin power play unit is flying high.
Add to that a pair of shorthanded goals during that series and two
power play goals against Michigan Feb. 6, and the Badger special
teams are playing as well as they have at any point all year.

Senior forward Jasmine Giles has never missed a game in her
playing career at Wisconsin, but Sunday's win over Minnesota State
is probably one that won't get lost among her countless starts.
After starting the game with a ceremony honoring the graduating
class of four seniors, the Badgers made sure their last game at the
Kohl Center would not be a disappointment.

Sophomore forward Matt Thurber has been suspended from the men's
hockey team for unspecified alleged violations of the UW Department
of Athletics' Student-Athlete Discipline Policy, the department
announced Tuesday. Thurber did not take part in team practice
Tuesday afternoon and will not be a part of any games or practices
until the suspension is lifted.

If you're lucky enough to find them, there are some pretty sweet
jobs out there. Who among us wouldn't want to be a taste tester for
the New Glarus Brewing Company, a high-profile movie star or a
supercar reviewer? I would probably say any job that would pay me a
decent amount of money to talk about sports would be the best gig
in the world.

After the emotional high of a victory in the first ever Camp
Randall Hockey Classic, men's hockey head coach Mike Eaves said he
is not worried about a letdown as his team prepares to face
struggling Minnesota State this weekend. According to Eaves, the
No. 3 Badgers will have plenty of motivation because of their high
ranking and chances for postseason success.

For all the excitement over the Camp Randall Hockey Classic this
weekend, the better game looks to be the women's hockey showdown
between Wisconsin and Bemidji State.

While most students enjoyed a nice snow day after a blizzard
swept through Madison last December, crews at Camp Randall Stadium
worked to keep the field and stands clear of snow to get ready for
this weekend's Camp Randall Hockey Classic. Thanks in part to their
work, Patrick Seltsman and Ice Rink Events were able to construct a
playing surface in the middle of a football stadium in little more
than a week.

There's no question hockey's experiment with outdoor games has
done great things for the sport. The NHL's Winter Classic is on its
way to becoming a New Year's Day tradition, and with college teams
getting on the bandwagon, the potential for games in great
venues—such as the ones that will take place Saturday—is only
increasing.

For Alberta native Saige Pacholok, outdoor hockey is nothing
new. Growing up in Canada, Pacholok has plenty of experience
playing on frozen ponds, meaning there are sure to be flashbacks to
her childhood when she takes to the ice for the Camp Randall Hockey
Classic.

DULUTH, Minn.—Wisconsin's keys to victory coming into their
series with Minnesota-Duluth were pretty simple: Use good
goaltending and strong defense to contain the No. 9 Bulldogs' top
line of Mike Connolly, Jack Connolly and Justin Fontaine, and
pressure the Duluth goal with a relentless shooting attack.

It's a refrain Wisconsin hockey fans are used to hearing: their
team may recruit well and have the talent to make a run at the NCAA
title, but for whatever reason they never convert on that
potential. That conventional wisdom held true last year, as a
promising squad collapsed in the last few series of the year and
failed to make the NCAA tournament.
(01/25/10 6:00am)
After the Wisconsin women's hockey team's 4-3 loss to St. Cloud
State Saturday, reality set in for sophomore forward Brooke
Ammerman. Coming into the series the Badgers sat at No. 7 in the
national rankings, placing them on the bubble for a berth in the
eight-team NCAA tournament.

Eleven months ago, the Denver Pioneers entered the Kohl Center
for a home series against the Badgers with a lot on the line. At
the time, Wisconsin, Denver and North Dakota were fighting for the
WCHA's regular season title and the MacNaughton Cup, and in two of
their final three series of the 2008-'09 season, the Badgers would
face both of those teams.

It sounds like the script from a Hollywood movie: after a
heartbreaking loss to Canada a few days earlier, the U.S. national
hockey team scored a game-winning overtime goal to upset the host
country, silence a hostile crowd and earn the gold medal.

With all of the decade retrospectives that went on last month, I
started wondering about what the biggest sports controversies were
of the past ten years.
(01/18/10 6:00am)
The Wisconsin women's hockey team fell in a pair of close
contests to the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs on the road, coming up
short in a comeback effort Saturday and struggling offensively
Sunday. Those losses mark the first time the Badgers have fallen in
a series sweep this season.
(12/14/09 6:00am)
Last Monday, a reporter asked Wisconsin men's hockey head coach
Mike Eaves about his team ""flying under the radar"" when it came
to their national ranking. But after hitting the road to North
Dakota and taking three points from their series against the No. 3
Fighting Sioux, the Badgers might not be under the radar much
longer.

Last night, Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin returned
to action after serving a two-game suspension for an illegal hit he
laid on the Carolina Hurricanes' Tim Gleason. While it is good to
see a superstar like Ovechkin finally serve some time for bending
and breaking the rules, his suspension sheds light on the NHL's
spotty discipline policy.
