Coming off a disappointing performance against their in-state rivals, the Badgers (2-1) bounced back with a 77-74 win against a tough Southern University (1-2) team Monday night. Sophomore forward Abby Laszewski led the way for UW as she had a career-high 25 points in UW’s victory.

When Jonathan Tsipis was hired to become the seventh coach in Wisconsin program history, one of his primary objectives was to recruit better talent than previous UW regimes. Tsipis had prior recruiting success as the associate head coach at Notre Dame and as the head coach of George Washington.

The last three meetings between the Wisconsin Badgers and the Iowa Hawkeyes have been absolute wars. Many expected this year’s matchup to be no different, as the Hawkeyes came off an impressive performance against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Still, Wisconsin ultimately won and improved to 10-0, the best start in program history, primarily resulting from superb defensive play.

In a chaotic week full of upsets for the top-10 teams in the College Football Playoff rankings, the Big Ten conference hardly had any surprising results. Wisconsin used key defensive plays throughout the game to defeat Iowa for the Heartland Trophy and clinch the Big Ten West for the third time in four years. Ohio State all but secured the Big Ten East as they handily dealt with Michigan State. Michigan extended its winning streak to three games as they look to do the unthinkable over these next two weeks and win out to spoil Ohio State and Wisconsin’s dreams of going to the College Football Playoff.

In a relatively chaotic weekend in college football, the Big Ten conference provided the most dramatic upsets for a college football fan to gorge on. Iowa upset Ohio State at Kinnick Stadium. Michigan State gave themselves a chance to possibly visit Indianapolis in December as the Big Ten East representatives as it upset Penn State. Wisconsin continues its push to win a second straight Big Ten West crown as it dealt with an overmatched Indiana team by using crucial defensive plays in the fourth quarter to prevail.

Kendra Van Leeuwen, a sophomore point guard on the University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team, spent the majority of her summer playing on the Team Canada’s U-19 women’s basketball team. Now, as Van Leeuwen enters her second season in Wisconsin, she hopes to have some of her international experiences pay dividends for both herself and the young Badgers.

In a wild and hectic week nine on the national college football scene, the Big Ten certainly didn’t disappoint. Penn State-Ohio State turned out to a be one of the best games of the season and set the Buckeyes up for a National Championship run. Northwestern knocked off Michigan State to throw off the Big Ten East. Meanwhile in the Big Ten West, the Badgers continued their winning ways by beating Illinois and maintaining their two-game lead over NU.

Week six of college football was like a buffet as it had a little bit of everything, blowouts, a seven overtime game, upsets and heart pounding last minute drives to decide games. Now that the majority of the Power Five conferences are well entrenched into their conference schedules, upsets were imminent. What was supposed to be a fun and joyous time for everyone that was attending the Route 91 music festival quickly turned into a war zone in Las Vegas. Last night while I was watching the horrific scenes unfold, I noticed that everyone in the news media was initially tentative in calling this a terrorist act.

After another brilliant 2016-‘17 campaign for the Wisconsin Women’s hockey team, Emily Clark and Annie Pankowski were tasked with a difficult conundrum — stay at Wisconsin in 2017-‘18 or represent their national teams in the olympics. Ultimately, they decided to redshirt their senior years, and they will instead represent their olympic teams. Clark will play for team Canada in February, and Pankowski for the United States.
