“Sound & Color” is the opening, eponymous track on Alabama Shakes’ recently released second studio album Sound & Color and could be considered the best song released this year. An eclectic mix of soul, beach rock, Motown and classic rock ’n’ roll, Alabama Shakes present a pleasing, full-bodied sound to contemporary American music by combining sounds from every decade since the 1950s. “Sound & Color” is a perfect representation of Alabama Shakes’ ability to pull at your heartstrings with the power of soulful lyrics and minor keyboard riffs. Opening with 40 seconds of slowly building, aesthetically pleasing keyboard, ethereal noise and calming percussive elements, Alabama Shakes have created what is possibly the greatest opening track to any album in the past five years.

Back in August 2014 I attended one of UW-Madison’s many welcome week events, The Understudies Improv show. I happened to sit next to three random guys whom, after asking me if I knew how to sing, identified themselves as Mike Fuller, Vinnie Biskupic and David Grube, all singers in Fundamentally Sound. As a week-old freshman I was completely unaware of the tremendous support, love and following this group experiences. But over the course of this past year that has completely changed and I had no idea how much this a cappella group would be a part of my freshman year.

March Madness is the best playoff system of any sport at any level, and it isn’t even close. The combination of a huge number of teams and the single-game elimination system makes it unpredictable every year. So unpredictable, in fact, we haven’t seen two No. 1 seeds make the championship since 2008, the only year where all four No. 1s made the Final Four. And there haven’t been multiple 1-seeds in the Final Four since 2009, when Connecticut and North Carolina were the only two.

Is it really second semester already? Even with a couple weeks under our belts, I’m not alone in still having a slight winter break fever. The start of classes came quickly, however I’ll admit, it was exciting to get back in the swing of things. With that said, I arrived to my first lecture a few minutes early in order to find a decent seat, scan the room for familiar faces and get all note-taking materials situated. To my surprise, minutes after I pulled out my laptop and opened a new notepad template, the professor announced, “There will not be screens allowed in my class.” Confused and embarrassed, I closed my computer and shoved it back in my backpack. Had I missed something? Never before had I been disallowed from taking notes on my computer, and I immediately questioned why.

Once again, the position of Wisconsin Badgers head football coach is open thanks to Gary Andersen’s shocking decision to leave Madison for Oregon State. Countless names are already being thrown around as possible candidates, but here are a few names that athletic director Barry Alvarez would do well to consider, along with a 1-to-5 rating of how interested fans would be in them and how likely they would take the job if offered. (Disclaimer: The following list of possible candidates is pure speculation. Their interest in the Wisconsin job and Wisconsin’s interest in them is unknown at this point in time.)
