EAST LANSING, Mich.—For the game's first 32 minutes, the
Wisconsin men's basketball team (8-7 Big Ten, 17-10 overall)
matched the No. 6 Michigan State Spartans' intensity in a hostile
road atmosphere. But the Spartans owned the game's final 12 minutes
with lockdown defense and aggressive inside play to defeat the
Badgers by a score of 61-50.

Last weekend's NBA All-Star festivities in Phoenix provided the
high level of entertainment that basketball fans have come to
expect over the years. The league maintained a similar format from
years past with different skill competitions, followed by the game.
The game was disappointing at best, as the West blew out the East
by a score of 145-119.

It was almost three weeks ago that the Wisconsin men's
basketball team lost its sixth straight game, a 66-63 defeat at
Northwestern. Confidence in the Bo Ryan era was at an all-time low,
and the Badgers' chances of making the NCAA tournament looked slim
at best. Needless to say, times have changed.

His mantra on leadership is relatively simple: Make sure that my

Many times, fans of professional sports and the players
themselves forget that athletes have extraordinary talent, but they
are also human beings. This certainly applies to New York Jets
quarterback Brett Favre, who recently announced his second
retirement from the NFL in 12 months.

The Wisconsin men's basketball team had already snapped its
six-game losing streak, but preparing for a road matchup against
Penn State left them little time to celebrate. On Sunday, the
Badgers showed that their losing ways are still behind them with a
decisive 54-44 victory over the Nittany Lions.

Earlier this week, 37-year-old outfielder Manny Ramirez rejected
a one-year, $25 million deal to re-sign with the Los Angeles
Dodgers. This was after Ramirez and his agent Scott Boras had
already passed on a two-year, $45 million deal from L.A. earlier in
the off sesason. To many readers, those numbers may seem
ridiculous, even for one of the game's best hitters. But to me, the
reason why Ramirez is not deserving of this salary lies not in his
current skill set, but in his poor behavior and lack of
professionalism over the past year.

As the Badgers continued their six-game losing streak, it was
clear that Wisconsin needed a definitive change in order to stop
its downward spiral. On Thursday night, strong defense and hustle
opportunities gave the Badgers all they needed, as Wisconsin
defeated the No. 23 Illinois Fighting Illini, 63-50.

Wisconsin freshman guard Jordan Taylor didn't get to this point

Things are getting ugly in a hurry for the Wisconsin men's
basketball team. The Badgers have lost five consecutive conference
games for the first time since 1998. They've lost back-to-back home
games for the first time ever under head coach Bo Ryan. If the
Badgers are to have any chance of making the NCAA tournament and
salvaging their season, they're going to need to get back to the
basics of what every winning team needs, clutch play and
consistency.
(01/28/09 6:00am)
On Tuesday night, the Wisconsin men's basketball team (3-5 Big
Ten, 12-8 overall) was hungry for redemption after a loss two weeks
ago at the hands of No. 17 Purdue. But a late run and clutch
shooting by the Boilermakers resulted in a 64-63 loss for
Wisconsin, which lost its fifth-straight conference game for the
first time since 1998.

As always, this weekend will provide plenty of entertainment for
sports fans. The college basketball season continues to heat up
during conference play, while the NBA and NHL have nearly reached
the midpoint of their respective seasons. But without taking
anything away from these events, this weekend will still likely be
remembered as the weekend before the Super Bowl."" The traditional
one-week break between the Conference Championships and Super Bowl
is a format that desperately needs a change.
