Multi-sport athletes at the collegiate and professional levels
have always been rare when each game requires so much devotion of
time and effort in order to become the best. The critics reason
that individuals can't possibly reach maximum potential in a
particular sport if they're trying to juggle two games at a
time.

Coach Bret Bielema and the UW coaching staff were faced with
several tough decisions before announcing the depth chart for
Saturday's opener against the Northern Illinois Huskies. It's
likely that the public was slightly thrown off by a depth chart
that includes shared duties at both quarterback and running back.

After a season of ups and downs and a dramatic win in the first
round of last season's NCAA Tournament, the UW men's basketball
team will prepare for another exciting year in 2009-'10.

I don't think I'm alone here when I say that most UW students
don't enjoy the week after Mifflin. Reality sets in quickly and I
realize what an absurd amount of reading needs to be done to make
up for a semester of relentless procrastination. But while the idea
of finals sounds nauseating, the week after Mifflin is also a week
closer to summer, an amazing time to be a sports fan. This summer
offers another exciting schedule, so here's a preview of some top
events to look forward to in the summer of 2009.

A Sports Illustrated report from earlier this week announced
that Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez could return to his team
sometime during the first week of May. This is just the latest
development in a tumultuous offseason for Rodriguez, who admitted
to using performance-enhancing drugs last February and, just weeks
later, underwent surgery for torn cartilage in his right hip.
Without a doubt, Rodriguez's return will receive plenty of
attention given his damaged reputation and the Yankees' slow
start.

The beginning of college signals a dramatic lifestyle change for
incoming freshmen. High school kids are suddenly faced with a
variety of new challenges, socially and academically.

When the NBA Playoffs begin tomorrow, LeBron James and the
Cleveland Cavaliers will enter with the league's best record,
clinching home-court advantage for the entire postseason. The Cavs
went 39-2 at home this season, making them a strong choice to
represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals. But while the
Cavs have every right to celebrate their extraordinary year thus
far, James and company may want to rethink their excessive on-court
antics.

Due to a mystery illness that has overtaken me over the past few
weeks, I am sorry to say that my television watching has increased
dramatically. Although lounging in front of the television might
seem appealing to some, I must say that I am very close to losing
my mind.

There's something in the air during baseball's opening week that
thoroughly rejuvenates fans. It could be that they sense spring
weather quickly approaching (Madison might be exempt from that). Or
maybe it's because even elderly people are suddenly presented with
the chance to wear their favorite teams' jerseys like they did back
in the third grade. In my case, it was an excuse for my roommates
and me to soak our apartment in the sweet aroma of delicious hot
dogs.

After Michael Jordan left the NBA for a second time following
his last championship in 1998, many feared the league might face an
identity crisis without its iconic superstar. They were correct;
the league has seen a notable decrease in popularity over the past
decade. Jordan's brilliant career is far behind us, but the league
could still boost its popularity by considering some changes in
format.

Sunday's loss to Xavier ended Wisconsin's rollercoaster season.
It also signaled the final on-court moments for two
seniors—forwards Joe Krabbenhoft and Marcus Landry. The season had
plenty of ups and downs, but Krabbenhoft and Landry stayed
optimistic from start to finish, showing true qualities of
leadership.

After a thrilling overtime victory in the first round of the
NCAA Tournament, the Wisconsin men's basketball team fell to the
No. 4 seed Xavier Musketeers by a score of 60-49, putting an end to
their season.

Saturday losses by Penn State and Minnesota put the Badgers in
control of their own destiny for seeding in next week's Big Ten
Tournament. On Sunday night, Wisconsin took advantage of this
opportunity with an 85-61 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers.

Late Wednesday night, the Dallas Cowboys cut ties with wide
receiver Terrell Owens. This signaled the end of Owens' three-year
career with the Cowboys and another failed experiment with the
controversial player. But more importantly, the Cowboys sent a
strong and valuable message to the rest of the league: To be a
successful team, you not only need to have a dynamic chemistry on
the field, but off the field as well.

Wisconsin's last matchup against Minnesota brings up painful
memories for UW, an overtime loss in which the Badgers surrendered
a six-point lead with under a minute left in regulation. On
Wednesday night, the UW men's basketball team (9-7 Big Ten, 18-10
overall) will have a chance for redemption when they travel to
Minneapolis to take on the Golden Gophers (8-8, 20-8).

Social networking websites are an undeniable facet of college
life, an observation made obvious by the numerous laptops in any
lecture hall, where Facebook can take precedence over academic
notes.

After Michigan's important win this week over Purdue, the UW
men's basketball team knew it would be tested when the Wolverines
visited the Kohl Center Sunday. Michigan fought back from several
big deficits, but clutch defense in the game's final minutes led to
a 60-55 win for the Badgers.

A trip to East Lansing, Mich., last weekend to cover the UW
men's basketball team allowed me to witness an excellent gameday
atmosphere. The Breslin Student Events Center is a unique
environment, an older building with a rich tradition of basketball.
But what impressed me the most about the experience was the setup
and character of Michigan State's student section, the Izzone. UW's
Grateful Red would benefit if the UW athletic department
incorporated alternative policies from Michigan State and other
universities.

The Wisconsin men's basketball team's second-half meltdown last
Saturday was a big wake-up call for a team fighting for an NCAA
tournament bid. The Badgers (8-7 Big Ten, 17-10 overall) will need
to respond quickly if they want to keep those hopes alive this
Sunday afternoon when they host the Michigan Wolverines (7-8,
17-11).
