UW provides no shortage of great memories
Growing up as a sports fan in New York, I pretty much had it all—historic franchises, arenas, rivalries and most importantly, fans sincerely obsessed with every part of it. Really the only thing the area lacked was a classic college sports experience. And now, after three and a half years in Madison, I feel fortunate to have been a part of this unique environment.
Jennings glad he began his career overseas
Last year Brandon Jennings became the first basketball player to go international rather than participate at the college level. His experience abroad has paid off so far, as the Milwaukee Bucks guard is averaging 22 points per game this year, including his 55-point effort a few weeks ago. With the NBA's collective bargaining agreement expiring in 2011, there are rumblings that Commissioner David Stern may try to raise the league's 19-year old age minimum. Based on Jennings' positive results from his abroad experience, raising the age limit could send even more potential NBA stars and NCAA standouts to international leagues.
Badgers face tough slate this season
After months of training and a two-game exhibition stint, the Wisconsin men's basketball team will kick off its season this Sunday night when they host Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. With an extremely competitive Big Ten Conference this year and a challenging stretch in late November and early December, it's crucial the Badgers start off strong to set the tone for a successful season.
NBA offers exciting regular season storylines
As a self-proclaimed NBA fanatic, it's frustrating when year after year I'm unable to convince most people to follow the league's regular season. This is especially difficult with a packed NFL schedule and the World Series going on at the same time.
McGwire has chance to redeem legacy
The Phillies-Yankees World Series matchup is without a doubt intriguing. The teams boast a pair of frightening lineups and stellar rotations. The Phillies are trying to become the first team to win back-to-back titles since 1999 and 2000. Ironically, this was the last time the Yankees were crowned champions.

A bye week could not have come at a better time for the Wisconsin football team.
Athletes must be cautious using Twitter
Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter have infiltrated practically every part of our society, sports coverage included. To date, Facebook holds more than 300 million active users worldwide, while Twitter receives roughly 55 million users per month. It comes as no surprise, then, that not just fans and organizations, but also athletes and coaches have begun participating in this trend.
Segredo's potential beyond bowling
As students, we face our fair share of academic adversity. In the face of this adversity, I feel it's best to follow one simple rule: When things get tough, just go bowling. Hopefully this is exactly what Michael Hierl was thinking when he proposed his plan to remodel the puzzlingly popular nightclub Madison Avenue as a very trendy restaurant and bowling alley.
ESPN documentaries a treasure for fans
Earlier this week a fellow columnist wrote about the dangers of ESPN's dominance over the sports media industry. I completely agree with his point in that context. But from a different angle, ESPN's presence in a huge media conglomerate can also create benefits across different platforms. In this case, it's access to entertainment.
Newcomers kick in for Wisconsin
The score may indicate otherwise, but those present at the UW football team's 38-30 win over Michigan State last weekend realize what a big-time statement it was. The Badgers always seem to let things get a little too exciting, as shown by a careless 91-yard touchdown reception they surrendered in the final minute. Wisconsin was in control for most of the game, answering critics who said their performance in non-conference games wouldn't cut it against the rest of the Big Ten.
Reflecting on a life spent cheering for the losers of sports
Last Sunday's improbable New York Jets victory over the New England Patriots gave me, and fellow Jets fans, plenty of reasons to be optimistic.

Former UW-Madison men's basketball freshmen Jeremy Glover and Diamond Taylor were officially charged with two counts of burglary Monday, according to a complaint filed at the Dane County Circuit Court.
Time is now for Vick
From Kanye West and Rep. Joe Wilson to LaGarrette Blount and Serena Williams, we've seen our fair share of apologies in the last few weeks. All of these figures have had their time in the spotlight.

Many students unaware of Breese Terrace Union
UW-Madison students could not miss the gigantic hole that replaced Union South last spring, but few have any clue a new union has opened in its place.
