Well, it’s Good Friday again — the one day a year where Catholics and Christians all around the world gather at church to thank God that Jesus was unjustly and brutally crucified (though I’m not sure any form of crucifixion is particularly peachy) at the hands of the Romans.

When Joe Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 presidential election, millions of Americans shared tears of relief or a shrug of acceptance. However, despite becoming president of the United States, voters always knew that there was one thing more important to Biden than helming the executive branch: ice cream.

April 4, 2022 marks the 130th anniversary of The Daily Cardinal. Founded by William Wesley Young in 1892, the paper was created to give students a voice that was both financially and editorially independent of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

When I joined The Daily Cardinal my first semester at the University of Wisconsin-Madison last spring, I was an associate news writer. Soon enough, I threw out the idea of creating a satire section, at which point I learned that that’s what the Almanac is — I had just assumed it was a calendar or horoscopes or something.

The jokes are made roughly 1,256,928 times per day — “You identify as a man/woman? Then I identify as an Apache Attack Helicopter.” Better yet, “I identify as a cat — treat me accordingly.” Well, Jeff, considering that you were excited to drop a deuce in a public playground’s sandbox after leaving the bar last weekend, I guess that’s only fair.

Millions of girls around the world have been referred to as “tomboys” from the time they were a child. In my case, as well as many others, this is known as “having an older brother” or “liking sports.” Whereas in younger years tomboys are treated as rough-and-tumble little ladies going through a phase, people seem to forget that it’s not always temporary.

On March 12, the University of Wisconsin-Madison suspended its mask mandate. This was to the great relief of those who have diligently followed CDC recommendations since March 2020, as well as those who never wore masks in the first place.

Following a drop in hamburger sales on Fridays due to the Catholic tradition of Lent, 1965 saw the Filet-O-Fish hit McDonald’s fast food restaurants nationwide. Nearly 60 years later, the menu item is still going strong — unfortunately, a little too strong.

Geraldine Moser of the University Book Store’s “Geraldine’s Pick” celebrated her 82nd birthday on March 2. A big milestone in itself, a new statement from the University of Wisconsin-Madison indicates that the campus icon received more than well-wishes and a piece of cake on her big day.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) came under fire on Saturday after sharing a screenshot of Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy while a video call among lawmakers was taking place. This is despite all participants being explicitly told not to do so by the Ukrainian ambassador.

With spring break beginning this weekend, many students can be overheard talking about their travel plans. However, this is not the case for everyone; some simply don’t like to travel, while others — especially the poors — are unable to take time off of work or can’t afford the price of gas for a road trip, let alone a plane ticket.

Like most states, Wisconsin does not mandate that employers give their workers a break during long shifts. While it may be the norm, not having any time to collect oneself during an 8+ hour work day can become grating over time.

On the first day of the spring semester, I walked into my Italian Film lecture in the lower level of Ingraham Hall. Trying to avoid accidental eye contact with the professor, I decided to sit near the back, but not so far back that it created a “This person doesn’t want to be here at all” vibe — whether or not that’s accurate is irrelevant.

The world was distraught on Feb. 24 after Russia invaded Ukraine. Given Putin’s unquenchable desire to have the world see him as a big boy, it’s not a surprise that former Soviet Union territory is the target of the unprovoked attacks.

By the time a healthy couple gets engaged, they’ve already talked about their shared goals and ideals as far as children, work, religion and finances. Twenty-six-year-old Cottage Grove native Stacy Brenner thought she knew everything about her now former fiancé, Ryan, before the December proposal.

In October, The Daily Cardinal was saddened to announce that Chancellor Becky Blank has decided to leave the University of Wisconsin-Madison at the end of the school year to become Northwestern’s next president. The step down was taken not for professional reasons, but to make a break from the hunky and thoughtful Buckingham U. Badger and run away with longtime love Willie the Wildcat.

The sports world was buzzing Sunday afternoon when Michigan men’s basketball head coach Juwan Howard became aggressive in the handshake line following a 77-63 Wolverines loss at the hands of the Wisconsin Badgers. Wisconsin’s Coach Gard attempted to shake Howard’s hand as well as explain the timeout that caused the Fab Five member’s frustration, prompting Howard to grab Gard before ultimately reaching over several mediators to slap Badgers assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft.

Wisconsin is currently in its first false spring, also known as the time of year where we all wake up and think “Huh, maybe I can get away with a light jacket today” only to return home at the end of the day with frostbite and a foot of snow to shovel.

Much of the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus community was distraught last week when underage students learned that fakes created by notable enabler Old Ironsides no longer scan at many frequented student bars.
