When a football game is described as a battle in the trenches, usually it refers to ground and pound football that is won and lost based on which team’s line can get the stronger push up front. When Wisconsin (0-1 Big Ten, 3-2 overall) takes on Nebraska (0-1, 2-3) this weekend, it won’t be a traditional trench war, but the game will hinge on the performances of both team’s big men on the line of scrimmage.

When people think of Big Ten football, they typically think of smashmouth running and strong defense, resulting in a low-scoring, close game. Wisconsin’s 10-6, conference-opening loss to Iowa fell in line with that archetype, but it was much more brutal.

“Our goal is to be a state team, not just a Milwaukee team.” Bucks head coach Jason Kidd put it simply when asked about why his team is practicing in Madison this week. They are making the Kohl Center their home in an effort to come together as a team and reach out to the greater Wisconsin community.

The Badgers may see some rainbows and a wave or two, but it won’t be a vacation for Wisconsin (2-1) as they take on Hawaii Saturday night. Coming off its convincing win over Troy, UW is rightfully bringing some confidence into this game, but the 2-1 Rainbow Warriors are much more intimidating than their historical performance suggests.

The original Trojan War was said to have lasted 10 years. If some Wisconsin homer were to write an Illiad about the Badgers’ victory over Troy, they would say this Trojan war lasted about an hour and a half until the road team was out of it.

When players come to UW-Madison to play football, they want to get onto the field as soon as they can in hopes of becoming the next great player to don the cardinal and white.

In many ways, Wisconsin’s win over Miami (OH) was like a party for the Badgers. There was dancing on the sidelines and in the stands, there was shuffling on the field and it was a coming out for a number of rising players. Wisconsin got its groove on early, and boogied their way to a 58-0 victory.

Some say first impressions are everything. Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst probably doesn’t agree. When he took over as head coach at Pittsburgh, his Panthers lost in their debut in 2012 against FCS opponent Youngstown State. He didn’t have much better luck in his first game running the show for the Badgers.

The college football season is upon us, and it’s never too early to start the Heisman watch. Every performance from all of the top players will be scrutinized from here on out by fans and media alike as they try to predict and later vote on who will win college football’s most prestigious award.

Wisconsin is known as an offensive line factory, and that factory has been working overtime leading up to the Badgers’ opening game against Alabama.

“If we can change one kid’s life, the mission is accomplished. Because that one kid could change a generation, could change a culture. That’s the idea.”

The 2014 NFL Draft was the first since 2010 that did not feature a Wisconsin Badger walking across the stage in the first round. Melvin Gordon should be able to put the school name back in the spotlight Thursday, like he did all season on the field.

Wisconsin wide receivers not named Alex Erickson combined for 39 catches and 427 yards in 2014. Wisconsin receivers named Alex Erickson compiled 55 catches for 772 yards. When Joel Stave and Tanner McEvoy dropped back to pass, they didn’t have a whole lot of consistent options on the outside to throw to.

It’s no secret that teams live and die by their quarterbacks, both at the collegiate and professional level. As Wisconsin fans have endured for years, a team can only go so far on the shoulders of its running backs. When it gets to those crucial third-down situations late in games, teams have to throw the ball, and the ones with the better quarterback usually finish on top.

It is fitting that the last two rounds of the NCAA tournament are called the Frozen Four. As the Badgers fell to the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Wisconsin had a frozen four of their own - their senior forwards. Brittany Ammerman, Blayre Turnbull, Karley Sylvester and Katy Josephs each put shots on the net, but none of them could put points on the board in their team’s 1-3 loss.

Brian Urlacher, Patrick Willis and Ray Lewis. When you think of the great middle linebackers of our era, those three come to mind. They were game-changing players who are headed to the hall of fame.

It’s not often that two conference rookies of the year face each other in the same game. That’s what’s happening Saturday as Annie Pankowski and Wisconsin take on Victoria Bach and Boston University in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.

Wisconsin head coach Mark Johnson may or may not believe in déjà vu, but as his team advances to the WCHA Final Face-Off for the fifth straight season, it may be time to start believing. For the third consecutive year, the Badgers will face North Dakota in the semifinals.

After suffering a loss in each of the final two regular season series, Wisconsin had extra motivation to get back on track in the opening round of the WCHA tournament. That motivation showed from the get-go against St. Cloud State, and it carried the Badgers to a series sweep this weekend.
