For most college students, the word \childhood"" will probably
evoke memories of Barbies, Legos and four-square. While we all
easily remember that childhood, it might be more difficult to
pinpoint that certain moment in time that causes us to leave behind
that carefree, uncomplicated life forever. ??

Most people's Thanksgivings are dominated by things like turkey,
football and relaxation. For me, this past weekend involved broken
glass, a photographer taking compromising pictures of me and 24
dancing rabbis. This was all thanks to my brother's wedding on
Sunday. But through all the craziness, everything went great and
the Earth hasn't yet opened up and swallowed us.

The fate of Jason Kwiatkowski's television show, like that of
all shows on WYOU, has been put in jeopardy. WYOU, Madison's
community television station, is at risk of losing the public
funding it relies on. Although WYOU provided Madisonians with an
open venue to express themselves to the community, six alders
proposed that the station's budget be shifted to a Madison public
access station already funded twice as much. Gone would a the show
produced by at-risk kids, showcases of Juneteenth celebrations,
Africa fests and other Madison cultural events to minor for
statewide news outlets to cover. After the Federal Communications
Commission deregulated television, cities were no longer required
by law to fund local stations. Many community stations, said
Kwiatkowski, have been forced to close.

And then, two years after it started, the War on Terror got on
track. At long last, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld put a
general in charge who was capable of actively pursuing President
Bush's orders to \smoke terrorists out of their holes."" In a true
breakthrough, this man had discovered the identity of terror's
supreme commander.

Ethan and Joel Coen have built a reputation as talented, off the
wall, extremely versatile filmmakers. Regrettably, I have only seen
a small handful of their films. Nonetheless, it's hard to miss
their influences-spectacular visuals, odd dialogue and characters
so quirky that you can't help but love them. \Intolerable
Cruelty,"" their latest offering, has been much maligned by Coen
fans who deem it too ""mainstream."" Mainstream or not, the Coens
have crafted a screwball romantic comedy that feels classic in
style and overflows with laughs.

It was a bad summer for environmental protection. And from the
looks of some of President Bush's more recent policy initiatives,
it is shaping up to be a bad fall, in a bad year, during a bad
administration when it comes to preserving the health and safety of
our air, land and water.

\Malibu's Most Wanted"" is set against the streets of Malibu,
where there is a pimped-out SUV on every corner and ""champagne
wishes and caviar dreams"" in every mansion. It is the story of
governor-hopeful Bill Gluckman (Ryan O'Neal) and his nearly perfect
family, wife Bess (Bo Derek) and their young daughter.?? The family
and Bill's campaign is inhibited from perfection by Bill's black
sheep son and gangsta poseur Brad (Jamie Kennedy, ""Scream"").??
Brad, or B-Rad as he goes by on the streets, spends his days
kickin' it with his crew Mocha, Monster, and Hadji (Kal Penn, ""Van
Wilder"") at the local Malibrew Coffee Shop and ""rapping about
anything.""

Now, more than ever, Americans must realize Israel is a champion
of democracy in the Middle East. Israel is a parliamentary
democracy with regular free and fair elections. These elections
reflect the society in which the citizenry live. This is because
Israel is one of the few places in the Middle East where all
citizens-'women and minorities included'have the right to vote.
With 120 elected representatives in the parliament, Arab-Israeli's
have their own party and hold 10 seats. Deputy Prime Minister Saleh
Tarif, an Arab-Israeli, is a minister in Ariel Sharon's cabinet. In
a country of roughly six million, Israel has over one million
Arab-Israeli citizens. It is a system of proportional
representation.

After the football game Saturday, I was walking down State
Street for a mid-afternoon burrito and a chance to watch some fool
dance to hippie bongos by the Towers. I looked around and saw
drunken parents stumbling out of Brats, child around their arm,
slurring words about what college was like \back in the day,"" when
you could take a ferry to Ogdenville for a bee (while wearing an
onion, which was the style back in those days).
