When many people think of February, Valentine's Day may
immediately come to mind. Despite the significance of this holiday
in that it allows participants to declare their love for the
important people in their lives, February also represents an entire
month of celebrating the achievements of African Americans
throughout American history. February is Black History
Month.

Thinking back on the twists and turns this year, it is hard to
believe I ushered it in freezing my ass off on a mountain on the
south island of New Zealand. During the course of 2002, I lost 40
pounds, got an eyebrow ring, worked for a senator, found myself a
wonderful girlfriend, jumped off a mountain, survived the riots and
somehow found myself in a position to grace UW-Madison with
articles based on my outlook on the world. Like the Chairman of the
Board sang, it was a very good year.

officials digitally altered the cover photograph for an admissions
booklet to include a black student to make the picture, and by
extension, the campus, appear more diverse.

The Madison-Dane County Tavern League will be out in full force
at tonight's Madison Public Health Commission meeting to protest a
proposal that would force a number of bars to become smoke-free
establishments. The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m., in room

The four dean of students finalists visited UW-Madison during
the past few weeks. Each spent two days meeting and interviewing
with students and staff. The person selected will replace Alicia
Ch??vez, who left the position in January.
