When I listen to tracks by Devonwho, a Los Angeles beat producer, the sunny, breezy shores of Santa Monica beach flow in and out of my ears. Listen to Andres from Detroit and your headphones will suddenly be lined with jazzy industrial rust from the Motor City. Music often defines a city, with tight groups of musicians producing sounds that will later be impossible to disassociate with their hometowns. Just like every living being on Earth, music scenes strive to evolve. So, what happens when a sound tries to wander outside of the city limits?

Despite some bright spots, Wisconsin’s weekend in the Arizona State tournament ultimately bore little fruit in the desert. Hoping to get the season off to a positive start, the Badgers’ record is now a losing 1-4.

“I love being alive i cant wait to hug you -Lil B,” read the tweet that The Based God himself posted on January 21st. The replies section was a digital church, with various users professing allegiance to the Berkeley rapper who has been producing music for over 11 years. He had just escaped a fire in his apartment and, to his dismay, was written up in the Contra Costa Times as an “aspiring rapper.” Many have written off Lil B as a gimmick rapper and some categorize his music as meme rap, the internet-born buzzword to connote music with the sole intention of going viral.

Parquet Courts took the punk scene by storm last year with Light Up Gold, an album that nailed the fundamentals of garage-rock. What separated Parquet Courts from the myriad of other punk bands was the subtle whiff of avant-garde noise that wafted from their headbob-inducing riffs.

I personally find it effective to compare music to dessert, because I tend to consume a lot of both. Jazz albums are so rich and intense that it’s almost bitter, just like a piece of triple-layered dark chocolate cake. Shoegaze albums feel like warm bread pudding that overtakes your mouth with a heated wave of nostalgic cinnamon sensation. In my experience, punk music is pound cake: a uniform, no-nonsense loaf of straight calories. This is very much the case with debut album Poison Everything from Southern California-based punk band Obliterations. If there was an ingredient list for Poison Everything, it would be a pound each of noisy guitar riffs, classic hardcore drumming and violent aggression.

If you haven’t already, go vote in the spring student elections! Vote “yes” to pass the Rec Sports Master Plan, which would create four brand new Rec Sports facilities across campus. Vote “yes” to make exercising and intramural sports more comfortable and enjoyable for the many future generations of University of Wisconsin-Madison students to come. And most importantly vote ‘yes’ because that’s the Badger thing to do. I already know what you’re thinking: Why should I care about something I probably won’t even get to enjoy during my time in college? Well, I argue, because it’s the right thing to do. As UW students, we pride ourselves on being the best at many things. Madison has been voted the best college football game-day town, “Jump Around” has been ranked as the best college football tradition, Wisconsin is recognized as one of the top party schools in the country, the school’s academics are documented as some of the most elite in the nation. The list goes on and on. I don’t see why we can’t add one more perk to the list of UW’s luxuries and have the best rec sports facilities in the Big Ten, too.

Last week I wrote an article bashing President Barack Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney, and I characterized them as center-right fascists with so much policy overlap as to be almost farcical. Almost. I promised I would write about an alternative candidate, one who is also on the ballot in 47 states, with the exception of Oklahoma, Michigan and Pennsylvania. In those last three states, challenges are currently in place to put him on the ballot. This man’s name is Gary Johnson. In my mind, he is the only qualified candidate running for the office of the presidency, and he is certainly the most rational.

his boots hit the dry Afghan dirt that reality set in.

Amidst all of that champagne in the Twins locker room a few weeks

As the Big Ten season comes to a close this weekend and teams
get locked into December bowl games, there is little doubt the
effects of some of the most unlikely games could have an effect on
the standings. Whether losing to a conference bottom feeder or
beating the big guys, this year's Big Ten season had its share of
upset specials that made it one to watch.
