With just under ten minutes left in the third period, the Wisconsin Badgers (2-2) found themselves down 6-5 in the second game of a weekend series at the Kohl Center against No. 6-ranked Boston College (2-2). After the second period saw UW on the verge of a collapse, as the Badgers at one point trailed 6-2, few would have believed that the Badgers could even bring the game back to within that one goal margin. Still, the Badgers were indeed knocking on the door throughout the last ten minutes of the game, but the early UW mistakes proved insurmountable, as the Badgers ultimately fell 8-5 to the Eagles.

The game of hockey at its highest, most professional level is quick, precise and detail-oriented day-in and day-out. Disregarding outliers, the professionals are crisp and businesslike in their approach to mastering their craft.

Whether in sports or in life, no one can understate the importance of a good first impression. As the puck dropped to open up the Badger men’s hockey team’s 2016 campaign, that fact was never clearer. With a new team and a new coaching staff, every minute on the ice was in service of that—forming a good impression.

Collegiate athletes have a naturally profound effect on their communities. However, this emotional relationship that the athletes share with their fans is often hidden beneath the game-focused routines that each athlete holds during their respective seasons. Still, despite the busy schedules that these athletes maintain, their desire to improve the lives of the members of their communities was never more present than at the “Badgers Go Bald” event at Camp Randall Stadium this past Friday.

In the eyes of many sports fans, an athlete is often solely measured in terms of their wins, losses and statistics. However, to a college athlete, their experience at a university goes way beyond those measures. To most college athletes reflecting on their career, the ability to grow and develop into a stronger and better person through playing a college sport is their standard metric.

After a hard-fought 77-83 loss to Maryland (15-2 Big Ten, 26-3 overall) last Thursday, the Badgers (3-14, 7-20) travel to Purdue (9-8, 18-10) to find a way to generate more momentum in their last regular-season game before the Big Ten Tournament.

With 45 seconds left to play in the first half, the Badgers (3-14 Big Ten, 7-20 overall) were remarkably down only one point to a Maryland (15-2, 26-3) team who currently ranked second in the Big Ten and sixth in the nation. Wisconsin senior guard Nicole Bauman tried to penetrate, but turned the ball over to Maryland’s redshirt senior guard Brene Moseley. Moseley mishandled the ball, and she and Wisconsin senior guard Tessa Cichy both dove for the loose ball in the middle of the court. Moseley found a way to corral the ball, and Maryland’s ensuing ball movement found junior guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough wide open for a three to extend the Terrapins’ lead.

Wisconsin (3-12 Big Ten, 7-18 overall) is gearing up for what ought to be an emotional afternoon on the Kohl Center floor. Saturday marks the last game this group will play together at home, and the senior day festivities and traditions will continuously remind the veteran corps of the last opportunity that they have to wear the Cardinal and White in front of their home fans. Still, despite the distractions and emotions that will be present throughout the game, the Badgers’ ultimate goal remains untarnished: beat Northwestern.

Now, 12 games later, the Badgers will travel to Bloomington, Ind. Sunday in an effort to win their second game against the Hoosiers.

The Badgers (3-9 Big Ten, 7-15 overall), in a close, back-and-forth contest, finally found a way to win their first game in a month Monday against Purdue (7-5, 16-7). Coming off seven straight losses, the Badgers focused on controlling the little things, and their efforts ultimately propelled them to a highly energized and rare victory. Wisconsin is looking to carry that momentum into its next game, a road trip to Michigan (5-7, 15-10) Thursday.

With only six games remaining in the season, the Badger seniors now know how much each game counts more than ever. In a season that has not lived up to lofty expectations, the Badgers (3-9 Big Ten, 7-15 overall), especially the seniors, are doing everything they can to pull as many wins out of the slim remainder of the season as possible. Fortunately for the group, the veteran corps’ effort paid off, as the team beat a tough Purdue (7-5, 16-7) squad 64-57 Monday night for the program’s first win since Jan. 10.

Pass, shoot and score. Drive, layup and bucket. Shot fake, dish and three. Ohio State (10-1 Big Ten, 18-4 overall), which is currently No. 7 in the nation and tied for No. 1 in the Big Ten, looked nearly robotic Thursday against the struggling Badgers (2-9, 6-15) in Columbus, Ohio. No matter what Ohio State looked to do on either ends of the floor, the Badgers just stood by and let the Buckeyes play their game. Instead of going out and attacking, the Badgers were passive all night, allowing Ohio State to dominate in every facet of the game and ultimately win by a whopping margin of 87-61.

After the Badgers (2-7 Big Ten, 6-13 overall) lost to Nebraska Wednesday, head coach Bobbie Kelsey was the most adamantly upset she has been all year. Generally, even after losses, Kelsey maintains a cool public demeanor. However, following the 75-62 loss, Kelsey exploded in the media room post-game, and her rant started trending all over the internet shortly thereafter.
