In the middle of the season, it is a common theme for coaches to dissect how a team is playing potentially above tangible results. Specifically, it is possible to grow from a game and build some good habits even in a loss. Still, at some point, if you want to be an elite team, the results have to be there.

Over the course of this season, Wisconsin has played seven different freshmen, and five of those first-year players have been in the lineup for all 11 games so far. Between quarterbacking the powerplay, playing on the penalty kill and being on the ice in close games as time ticks down, this freshman class has had a tremendous impact on Wisconsin’s season thus far.

For the first time since 2010, the Kohl Center will be hosting a top-ten men’s hockey matchup. The No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers, for the first time in three years, have cracked the top-10 of the USCHO poll after a couple of seasons rebuilding a largely storied program. Despite the dominance of the Wisconsin program, No. 4 North Dakota (5-2-1) has been arguably even more historic, developing players like Chicago Blackhawk Jonathan Toews. With probably the most anticipated game in recent memory coming to the Kohl Center, UW is feeling a great deal of mixed emotions regarding the elite matchup.

Simply put, the Badgers dominated St. Lawrence in the opening game of their weekend series. Ultimately, Wisconsin outshot the SLU 42-19 — which is an impressive margin — but, more shockingly, UW recorded 84 shot attempts to the Saints’ 40.

In its two years under head coach Tony Granato, Wisconsin has been focused on building an identity for its program. Granato has instilled an identity of confidence and determination — but, mostly, over the last two seasons, Wisconsin has prided itself on forming its identity of unity.

The No. 6 Wisconsin Badgers have started the year 4-1 behind victories against the No. 19 and No. 13 teams in the nation — a substantially better start than the last two years in which the Badgers were a cumulative 3-4-3 (0-2-3, 3-2-0) after the first five games of each respective season.

“I don’t know, I feel alright. Obviously I would have liked to play better, play some more. I’m just in a little bit of a drought right now. I’m not playing as well as I would like to.”

After last night’s 3-2 loss to Ohio State, head coach Tony Granato said something intriguing about junior forward Ryan Wagner in relation to the rest of his lineup.

Hockey is truly a team sport, and, as such, when Wisconsin is preparing for an opponent, it makes itself aware of the strengths and weaknesses of most of the players on the opposing roster. Still, in some cases, when the other team has an elite player, Wisconsin focuses its attention on stopping them individually.

Whenever you see any finished product, you’re usually oblivious to all of the intricacies and processes that helped shape and design what you end up viewing. The same holds true in sports. When you see a team on the field or the ice, it is nearly impossible to appreciate the behind the scenes work and preparation, including nuance, detail and perfectionist planning that led to what you observe during the game. Specifically, for the Wisconsin hockey team, a significant amount of that forethought and preparation is dedicated solely to the formation of its lineup.

At any level, and in any sport, how a team will perform in its first game is largely based on speculation. Before the game, even with seeing players in practice, it is impossible to predict how players individually, and the team collectively, will respond to live action. For the Badgers, their first game was no different. Still, despite game one being this team's first real action together, it was largely successful.

Entering last season, there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding Wisconsin. The Badgers had just come off a dismal 2015-’16 campaign (8-19-8 overall, 3-13-4 Big Ten ), finishing last in the Big Ten in one of their worst seasons in program history. Still, there was still optimism for the team surrounding a few elite players, and, more importantly, a new coaching staff led by a Badger product in head coach Tony Granato.

The 2017 NFL offseason was fun, dramatic, exciting, rewarding, somber, unpredictable and emotional for a group of Wisconsin players that were trying to make their dreams of playing in the National Football League come true. Many Badgers had the opportunity to make an NFL squad, but, ultimately, only a few former UW standouts made a 53-man roster and will be on an active roster for the start of the 2017-’18 season. Still, even though many players were cut after an offseason of training with their respective squads, some Wisconsin players’ offseasons ended in pure joy, as their professional careers are just getting started.

From the opening kickoff of their matchup with Creighton (0-2), Wisconsin (2-1) looked absolutely dominant. The Badgers controlled the pace and pushed the ball up field, creating opportunity after opportunity. Really, from the get-go, there was little doubt that Wisconsin was going to rebound from its 5-0 loss to then No. 2 Stanford. Ultimately, UW’s pace and attack driven mentality lifted them to a convincing 2-0 win over the Bluejays.

Once the third period started, the Badgers were finally able to get their legs going. From the start of the final frame, the Badgers were pushing the puck up ice, creating shots on goal and crashing the net for rebounds. Still, the effort and attack during that period proved too little too late, as the lethargic No.16 Badgers (12-7-0-0 Big Ten, 19-13-1-0 overall) ultimately lost decidedly 5-1 against No. 15 Ohio State (10-8-1-1, 19-10-6-0).

Not many college hockey players get the chance to play for their dream school. But for a select group of kids that one day find themselves at the school of their dreams, they carry an extra sense of pride every time that they step on the ice.

Coaches often stress the importance of playing with a lead. Playing with a lead allows a team to skate with confidence and play more sound hockey without taking chances. This was never more evident for the Badgers than it was this weekend, as they thrived while playing with the lead but struggled to play sound hockey when skating from behind.

With the speed and physicality of college hockey, there are often games where both teams spend a considerable amount of time on the power play and on the penalty kill. Fortunately for the Badgers, they have had a lot of success on special teams this season, and it has been a big reason why they sit only one game back from the top of the Big Ten.
