Faced with the task of designing and building a racecar from scratch then taking this potential deathtrap for a test drive may sound terrifying, but for engineering major Billy Kucinski, it is an opportunity to learn through doing what he loves.

In a time when we have to be able to laugh at ourselves to survive, John Oliver is a comedic genius. Where other satirists stick to roasting our media or political leaders, Oliver excels at poking fun at all of us (and often himself too) for our ridiculous mannerisms and weird obsessions. He’s set to take the stage at Madison’s Orpheum Theatre for two shows this Sunday, Dec. 7.

For anyone who grew up in the ’90s and 2000s, you’re probably familiar with Dave Chappelle. The trailblazing comedian is most famous for spending two seasons hosting his own sketch comedy show “Chappelle’s Show” on Comedy Central before abruptly leaving in 2006 with no explanation. Since then no one has really known what Chappelle has been up to until seemingly out of no where he announced a stand-up tour which brought him to Madison’s Orpheum Theatre for a total of six shows this weekend.

"Bonnaroo brings good vibrations for all"
(07/16/14 7:46pm)
Going to Bonnaroo is a bit like going to a museum filled with lots of stuff to see in a short period of time—except hotter, dustier, and less judgmental. Everyone is trying to get a glimpse of as much as they can, but most know they’ll have a more intimate experience at their hometown venue when the new act comes to town. Trying to see as many performances as possible at Bonnaroo is surely a valid quest, but be prepared to make tough choices. There is too much going on to see it all, but that is also the beauty of Bonnaroo. It is complete sensory overload and you will be pissed at yourself that you had to pee twice during James Blake and that you had to choose between seeing The Flaming Lips, Frank Ocean and the Skrillex Superjam. Still, the four-day fest is completely exhilarating. And the moment you get on the freeway heading home tired and dirty in the middle of the night, you’ll immediately wish you were back on The Farm.

There are plenty of parallels to draw between Jack White and Kanye West. They are two artists the press has recently criticized—and each took time to mention those recent qualms during their performances at Bonnaroo—and they are two artists who continue to innovate, collaborate and alienate within their respective genres. With the headlining slots on Friday and Saturday, West and White both touted their statuses as rockstars during their sets, which got us wondering: who’s really the rockstar?

Texas couldn’t hold ’em: These three SXSW favorites have upcoming shows in Madison

Tuesday, March 11 found our intrepid Arts editor Cheyenne Langkamp on the beat at South by Southwest for sweet tunes and good movies. Here’s some of the things she saw down in Austin, Texas:

A big part of the magic that is South by Southwest is never knowing what to expect. Putting aside well-known acts like Pusha T, home grown favorites a la Phox and artists like Against Me! who are stopping by Madison soon, here are some new acts we’re intrigued by down in Austin:

South by Southwest attendees have often been the first to lay their eyes on the best film has to offer and this year will likely be no different. With big names like Wes Anderson and Nicolas Cage walking the streets of Austin, Texas who knows what will happen. Still, as with music, the main focus is on discovering quality movies often made on a low budget that highlight new talent. Here are five we’re hoping to catch while here:

The last time Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe came to Madison, they took a shot of Goldschlager with two guys dressed as milk cartons. It was last October and the Lucius frontwomen were in town to play Freakfest.

Three decades into playing a significant role in the rise of experimental indie rock, Yo La Tengo has still not tired of making good music. The trio of Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew have found success once again on their 13th album, Fade, out this past January, with a deluxe version released in November.

Although many of my fellow Badgers probably spent last Saturday attending the final Farmer’s Market or celebrating the win against BYU, I found myself unable to get out of bed. Mostly because I was lazy, but also because I felt something important was missing. There was a hole in my heart that would normally have been filled by 'Saturday Night Live,' as the cast had this past weekend off.

There is no shortage of lo-fi indie-folk floating around today’s music scene (aka the Internet). But I would argue much of it is produced for that reason alone—it being the current fad—not as a stylistic choice. In that light, artist Phil Elverum is refreshing—something different, though not exactly something new.

Clashes with authority are not new to our generation. We’ve watched protesters be overtaken by police in the streets of New York City and Istanbul. We’ve also seen security pursue our ridiculous peers through the benches of Camp Randall’s student section. Less familiar to many of us is an authoritative system that actively hinders art or culture. But there’s one prominent figure currently confronting precisely that issue on a daily basis throughout the streets of our most popular city.

Many of us may not be familiar with Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser, the two New York City natives who make up Holy Ghost!, a synthpop duo with heavy disco and funk influences. The boys have been working together under various group names since the early 2000s and are now known for creating catchy ’70s and ’80s club tunes. The duo recently released their second album, Dynamics.

The Haim sisters have been hovering in the periphery of the music industry for their whole lives. From a family band during their years growing up in California to early tours behind acts like Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Ke$ha, Este, Danielle and Alana Haim’s success was a long time in the making. The three subtly took the summer by storm, which not so subtly included a successful appearance at Britain’s legendary Glastonbury festival.
