I have been a massive Coldplay fan for the last five years. My love affair with Coldplay began with me listening to some of their chart-toppers and has only grown stronger since then. However, deep into my first semester here at UW-Madison, I realized that I needed more than just their chart-toppers. So, I began listening to their entire albums, unearthing some lovely hidden gems along the way.

I, Anupras, came into this semester facing a new responsibility. This was my first semester taking on the mantle of Opinion Editor, hoping this role would add color to my life. Lucky for me, my co-editor Sam Jones turned out to be an effervescent breath of fresh air — any apprehensions I had about working together with another person had been put to ease. The very first thing I noticed about her, way back in January (which now feels like 10 years ago) was that we had the exact same headphones. Months down the line, it would stand for a lot more than just mere coincidence.

Karen McSmith — styled as @ksmizzy on Instagram — made waves last evening with clips she posted on her Instagram during the afternoon. Known to her millions of adoring fans — popularly called the Smizzy Army — as an influencer, she took to social media to address them during these uncertain times.

As our news feeds are oversaturated with DIY mask tutorials and troll-worthy conspiracy theories fill the spaces previously occupied with dog videos and food-based ASMR, we need high-quality and empathetic journalism more than ever.

UW-Madison freshman Alex O’Johnson has made waves in recent days for his heroic display at a qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, to be held in 2021. In front of a grand audience of two cameras and a cat, he smashed the Olympic record for discus throwing, reaching 88 meters — or as normal people would say, 288.714 feet — in his very first attempt. Seeing such a stellar first throw, the remaining participant decided to walk away, handing O’Johnson an easy peasy lemon squeezy victory.

Wednesday, March 11, 2020 will always be remembered as a defining moment in the history of UW-Madison, for this was the day a pandemic resulted in an unprecedented move to online instruction and partial shutdown of residence halls. The days that followed since have seen increased closures and expanded restrictions, both by the university and the state of Wisconsin.

The beginning of 2020 has seen the rampant rise of the Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), a pathogen originating in Wuhan, China and spreading rapidly worldwide. Not much concrete information is available about the pathogen — with research ongoing — but the virus has been known to cause COVID-19, a contagious and potentially fatal respiratory disease. All of this has resulted in widespread fear and panic, but also an uptick in racist and xenophobic attacks on people of East Asian ethnicity.

As an international student from the United Arab Emirates (rather, an Indian citizen brought up in the UAE away from his motherland) and a born-and-raised Midwesterner, we have different experiences with the concept of ‘patriotism.’ Yet, we both see love for country the same way — as a means of advocating for progress and change, not an excuse or justification to maintain antiquated laws and social norms.

I will admit this — I have looked my name up on Google in the past, multiple times. Some of the search results that come up make me feel quite proud of whatever I have done in life so far, while others make me turn red in embarrassment. However, one day, I found something that ticked me off.

As 2019 came to a close, I set aside some time for introspection and thought of everything I had been through in the last year. There were some lows and unprecedented highs. The year may have peaked and troughed like a sine curve, but I knew I could move into the next decade happy with everything that had transpired in 2019. Soon, however, I came across an article reviewing the major global news stories of 2019, which refreshed memories I had hoped to flush out of my mind.

Cast your minds back to high school, a time when we were all busy working on our college applications. We used to toil like worker ants, scurrying around to squeeze in every extracurricular we could find and grinding away to make sure we scored the best we could on every test we took.
