The people — mostly women — that filled the Barrymore Theatre wall-to-wall on Sunday night collectively doubled over for two hours when Ilana Glazer compared her HPV to Britney Spears and Phoebe Robinson detailed the ins and outs of eating fried chicken in front of her boyfriend for the first time.

We’re just over halfway through the music portion of live-music heaven that is SXSW, and the talent here has been so consistent, none of the Daily Cardinal arts desk has slept in days. This is an exaggeration, but not as far off as you might think.

Just a few months after their stop in Madison this November on their tour with Alex G, LVL UP returned to the Isthmus last night to headline some impressively tight, controlled indie rock chaos—emphasis on controlled.

As I wiggled a pair of stiff jeans over my hips in the packed State Street Urban Outfitters dressing room on Sunday, a fellow dressing room patron ran into their friend. “You going to D.R.A.M. tonight?” said friend one. “Of course!” friend two responded.

At this point, after going to three of their shows in the past five months, seeing Porches is a ritual: Brush your teeth, go to work, do laundry, go see Porches. But unlike most rituals, no matter how many times I see them, the last thing Porches will ever be is mundane.

Instead of standing in a pit of my youthful peers, so close to the stage that I could feel lead singer Will Toledo’s drips of perspiration, I marched up to the Majestic’s balcony and sat in what I usually refer to as the Designated Dad Area. To be fair, after a nonstop 13-hour school/work day, I felt more like a tired dad of seven rowdy rugrats than a spritely 20-year-old. Even though Car Seat Headrest is a rock band I truly love, one of the hottest bands in the indie rock scene at the moment, I was wiped and, what the kids would call, “over it.” That changed pretty rapidly over the course of three sets. I came into the venue an old dad, and left the nimble Teen of Style that I truly am.

Despite all that classic college fun, and despite the fact that we all know how lucky we are to be in college receiving an education, let’s face it: College can be really hard. Sometimes you pull excruciating all-nighters locked in nasty library cages. Sometimes you stare blankly at a wall for an hour after being handed an intimidating syllabus. Sometimes you shed a tear or two in the Vilas bathroom. Sometimes you wake up on the floor next to your friend’s futon at 3 p.m. on a Thursday feeling more like a half-eaten raisin than a human being, surrounded by a sea of Gordon’s quesadillas that you don’t remember ordering.

There’s no doubt that Caroline Smith has gone through a metamorphosis. There’s also no doubt that she’s never stopped being Caroline Smith.

Amid a sea of over 900,000 people in Austin, Texas, at South by Southwest music and film festival, I sought out inclusive and safe spaces. Although the two could work together, it’s important to decipher the actual cultivation of a “safe space” from a buzzword label thrown around by institutions like college administrations and PR efforts. That being said, creative safe spaces are complex and dynamic, and the ways in which we foster inclusive experiences as an arts community aren’t necessarily concrete.

AUSTIN, Texas— Sunday brought more excitement to the film scene down in Austin, Texas. At the Convention Center, Kerry Washington gave her insight on the positives and negatives of social media and how she chooses to portray herself within the public eye. Later, the cast and creator of “Mr. Robot” discussed the authenticity behind the making of the series, commenting that they have an actual FBI consultant to make the series as realistic as possible in crafting the narrative surrounding Rami Malek’s character Elliot. Theater venues like the Paramount premiered screenings of “The Trust,” starring Nicholas Cage and Elijah Wood, “Don’t Think Twice,” with Keegan-Michael Key and “Hardcore Henry” by director Ilya Naishuller.

This time of year every year, just as things start to thaw here in Wisconsin, everything is already ablaze in every way possible down in Austin, Texas. I’m not just talking about their fiery temperatures or spicy food. The film portion of South By Southwest begins tomorrow, followed shortly by the music festival, and it will indeed be lit—and we're about to join.

Throughout the entirety of Lizzo’s show Friday night at the Majestic Theatre, the audience level was never less than a booming rumble, with the exception of one moment. “Where are all the Big Grrrls?” Lizzo yelled mid-show to preface her song “B.G.S.W.” A portion of the audience shyly clapped and a couple of people hollered, but there was a slight lull in the crowd’s energy. “I don’t just mean big in stature. Big isn’t just physical,” Lizzo explained. “You can be big in what you believe, who you are, your personality, your style.” The crowd went back to a full eruption. These words, and her entire performance, were a welcome reassurance in a world where both individuals and entire groups of people are frequently told to be sorry for the space they occupy, physically and otherwise.

Storytelling has always been at the core of all folk music. A talented lyricist in tandem with the right instrumentals has the ability to transport you to another time, place or world. Singer, songwriter, harpist and pianist Joanna Newsom did just that with her skilled band. While touring her successful 2015 album Divers, they gave two hours of next-level, avant-garde, indie-folk story time at The Orpheum.

UW-Madison’s thriving art department continually brings in brilliant artists and instructors to its Visiting Artist Colloquium, and Kate Roberts is no exception. With both a BFA and a MFA in ceramics from Alfred University, one of the top ceramics programs in the country, she’s carried her unique approach to ceramic art through residencies and internships at art centers around the world. This includes Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, La Meridiana in Italy, Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, Project Art in Massachusetts and Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill in Massachusetts. Her work is currently on display in the Art Lofts Gallery in a mixed-media show entitled “Strange Habits.” The show opened on Friday, October 2 and features Robert’s new work and several other talented instructors including Jordan Adams, Barbara Landes, Kate Roberts, Barry Roal Carlsen, Maggie Snyder, Grace Sullivan and Michael Velliquette. It is a collective commentary on habitual human nature and the physical and abstract presence that it exudes in our lives and the world around us.

A field of 7,500 knit-clad folks, a brisk autumn night and an absorbing Avett Brothers performance is an equation for an October utopia. The Avett Brothers, and their sea of fans, christened Breese Stevens Field on Friday night in the venue’s first-ever concert that sold out in 10 minutes.
