The very title of Monty Little’s exhibition on the second floor of the Chazen Museum of Art — “Premonitions” — eerily retrospects a native identity still unravaged by European colonialism and genocide. The installation’s first half, at least, implicates and convicts the familiar iconography of American history. Monotypes of presidents look less like decorated portraits than a lacerated series of charcoal-smothered caricatures. A long scroll drapes from a wall in the center of the gallery’s first half, its text a continuous stream of ratified treaties between various Indigenous groups and the US government.

The 2023 Wisconsin Film Festival's series of short films titled “Experiments,” shown at the Chazen Museum of Art earlier this month, demonstrated the power of short form film. While the featured shorts required extensive effort to achieve their visions through mediums such as stop motion, animation, 3-D rendering and film, their timestamps left audiences infatuated and curious.

Indie rock musical artist Andrew Bird, born and raised in the Chicago area, traveled to Madison on his “Inside Problems 2023” tour earlier this month at the Sylvee. Bird waltzed onto the stage to cheers of excitement from a diverse crowd, bearing his signature violin and a soft smile. Accompanied by both a bass guitarist and his opener Ted Poor, Bird jumped right into a set that wowed the crowd.

In case you couldn’t tell by the title, “Good Guy With A Gun” is a story about guns and whether people should use them. The story centers around Will (Beck Nolan), a teenager from Chicago whose unarmed father is fatally shot while trying to prevent a robbery. Will and his mother, Tessa (Tiffany Bedwell), soon take a trip to rural Illinois, where guns are just as abundant as beer — both of which the locals have no issue selling to teenagers.

The 25th annual Wisconsin Film Festival kicked off on April 13 with an opening night reception featuring the announcement of this year’s Golden Badger Award winners followed by a screening of the Ukrainian film “Luxembourg, Luxembourg.” The ceremony took place in the Great Hall at Memorial Union with a collection of University of Wisconsin-Madison staff members, filmmakers, undergraduate students and community members celebrating the art of cinema and demonstrating continued support for Wisconsin filmmakers.

With a star-studded cast, a large budget and a fantastic director, "Babylon" was a movie built for greatness but fell short of reaching those standards. The early Oscar hype for the category of Best Picture only manifested into three nominations: Best Original Score, Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. Nevertheless, the movie is still very respectable and worth a watch.

As we awaited the vaccine, voices rang out for the Wellerman to come “to bring us sugar and tea and rum.” This shanty cry for a supply ship to bring relief went viral — a recognition of the power of work songs across time and context.

Curator Amara Hark-Weber's background as a professional shoemaker distinguishes the space, where viewers can interact with the shoemaking process from conceptualization and construction to completion.

Irish rock band Flogging Molly performed at the Sylvee on March 3. They were joined by openers Anti-Flag and Skinny Lister. Despite the absence of Flogging Molly violinist Bridget Regan, all bands gave motivating and political performances that energized the audience.
