Wisconsin cornerback Rachad Wildgoose has left the program to declare for the 2021 NFL Draft, he announced in a tweet this past Friday morning. The announcement came as a major surprise to Wisconsin fans and Big Ten media alike, given his relatively low draft stock from a national perspective. Wildgoose will forego his senior season with the Badgers, a route few defensive standouts have chosen under Defensive Coordinator Jim Leonhard.

Sports and religion have always been intertwined. Religious studies author Robert Ellis points out that in ancient times, sports were seen as “communication with the divine,” and we see this exemplified in many primordial cultures. Cherokee Native Americans played a game understood to be in the presence of the “Great Spirit,” and this early form of organized sport was a means of ensuring fertility.

The No. 19 Northwestern Wildcats (4-0) are surprisingly having one of their best seasons in decades. Coming into the 2020 season, Northwestern football was not in a good state. Although they had one of the most experienced rosters in all of college football, many were worried that Northwestern would have a similar lack of success as they did in 2019.

Two games into the No. 10 Wisconsin Badgers’ (2-0) abbreviated 2020 season, much of the talk has been about quarterback Graham Mertz, and rightfully so. The freshman quarterback followed his stellar debut against Illinois with another efficient, turnover-free performance at Michigan, the team’s second blowout victory in as many outings.

After dominating the Michigan Wolverines (1-3) — a historic football powerhouse — the No. 10 Wisconsin Badgers (2-0) are headed to Evanston next week to face No. 19 Northwestern Wildcats (4-0). In No. 10 Wisconsin’s Week 1 win over Illinois, it happened on the Fighting Illini’s first drive in the fourth quarter — backup quarterback Isaiah Williams replaced starter Brandon Peters, who had completed just eight passes for 87 yards to that point. He promptly threw three incompletions and added an interception for good measure.

Just minutes into the 2019 season, safety Scott Nelson — then a redshirt sophomore — suffered a leg injury that would pull him out of Wisconsin’s week-one win over South Florida. A few days later, he announced on Twitter that his season was abruptly over.

There is no better feeling than waking up on a Badger game day, with ecstatic energy in the atmosphere, the people of Madison united in red and the smell of brats roasting on the barbeque. All of this seemed very distant, however, as the season was canceled in late August, leaving Badger fans everywhere devastated.

Coming into Friday night’s game against Michigan (1-3), there were a litany of questions surrounding the No. 10 Wisconsin (2-0) football program. Nobody knew about quarterback Graham Mertz’s status, who would miss the game due to COVID-19, or how the team would respond after missing two consecutive weeks of practice. Expectations were high, but some rust was certainly expected.

The 2020 Michigan Wolverines (1-2), a program that often lauds themselves as the winning-est program in college football history, has looked nothing of the sort this season. This Michigan team is sporting the worst starting record under head coach Jim Harbaugh’s tenure after losing back-to-back games against the Indiana Hoosiers (3-0) and their bitter in-state rivals in Michigan State (1-2).

In the span of a few weeks, the Wisconsin Badgers have gone through a roller coaster of news. With the cancellation of the games against both Nebraska and Purdue, Wisconsin will likely need to win each of its remaining five games in order to keep its College Football Playoff hopes alive.

When No. 13 Wisconsin (1-0) fans highlighted this Saturday’s game against Michigan (1-2) on their calendar, they probably anticipated it would be among the teams most pivotal in the race to win the Big Ten West. And, while that remains the case, no one could have foreseen the circumstances leading up to the game for both teams.

When the Michigan Wolverines rolled into Camp Randall Stadium on the morning of Sept. 21, 2019, the closest thing to a worry in Madison, Wis. was how the Badgers defense would defend against Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson.
