This last weekend, Pete Holmes performed two sold-out stand up sets at the Majestic Theater and recorded his podcast "You Made It Weird" for the Madison Comedy Festival. Attending both the stand up and podcast recording as an avid fan of Holmes, I noticed how the crowds were drawn to his presence just as much as the self-proclaimed super fan.

In support of the first annual Madison Comedy Festival on his “Under No Influence” tour, comic Chris D’Elia performed in front of a packed crowd of college-aged fans who eagerly anticipated his material. D’Elia’s set pandered mainly to the Dane Cook repertoire of sex jokes, gender and race observations and wild movement.

This past Monday, amongst the long hours of studying for midterms, a vivacious and spirited concert took place at the Orpheum. Students and locals alike made their way down State Street to see Timeflies perform. Despite the pouring rain, this concert continued to fill up with devotees by the minute. With the scent of fresh rainfall around me, I was ready for the concert to begin.

In a world dominated by main stage dance music, where the success of an electronic musician is too often defined by their ability to make a crowd “rage,” a select few artists have been making strides to break out of the EDM prototype and bring fresh, meaningful ideas to the table. Porter Robinson is one of them. This Saturday, the Orpheum Theater will host Porter Robinson’s “Worlds” tour, an extravagant and cohesive live show centered on Robinson’s new album Worlds, which dropped worldwide last month.

If you’re an avid fan of all classic horror films—even or especially the ridiculously cliched ones—your weekend probably included taking in "Evil Dead: The Musical" at the Overture Center. When my editor sent out the email for someone to cover the musical, let’s just say I have never pounced that fast on anything. So come Thursday night, my friend and I headed on over to the Overture, to take in our very first show there. Needless to say, we could not have possibly picked a better one.

In honor of World Suicide Prevention Day, the Majestic Theater hosted a Robin Williams tribute screening of the movie “Good Will Hunting” this past Thursday. The movie played as part of the Majestic’s Brew n’ View series, which as the name suggests provides a rare opportunity for die-hard movie fans to get soused while watching their favorite classic films on a big screen.

As a freshman, I attended a trio of shows at what is now called Shannon Hall, packed tight into the chilled and straightened annals of February and March: the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (Feb. 4, 2012), Gaelic Storm (Feb. 17, 2012) and Béla Fleck and the Flecktones (March 1, 2012). Three acts so wholly dissimilar that, upon reflection, it seemed absurd that (as a student) I was afforded the opportunity to see them all under one roof. For cheap! Such an experience (in retrospect) was not to be taken lightly.

It took me a while to start writing this review. I had to sit in the middle of the floor and hug myself, rocking back and forth and muttering “It was just a movie, I should really relax” over and over. I’m at an ideological stalemate here; I usually only reserve the Mystery Science Theater 3000 mantra for movies that I actively dislike because they’re poorly made. But “Prisoners” isn’t poorly made. It’s actually one of the better films I’ve ever seen. But—and imagine now that I’m tugging at my shirt collar and swallowing nervously—that’s the problem.
