The Children’s Theater of Madison kicked off its season with the adorably entertaining “Madagascar – A Musical Adventure,” based on DreamWorks' animated motion picture. The show just finished its run at the Overture Center’s Playhouse theater on Sunday, Oct. 22.

The only person who could possibly feel themselves while wearing a sweater in the balmy heat of this confused Wisconsin weather is none other than empowering Midwest-raised rapper, Lizzo. Entering the stage wearing a fuzzy red heart on her chest, she went full-force from the beginning to end of her set, belting near-flawless anthems of feminism and body positivity.

Folk artists Gregory Alan Isakov and Blind Pilot teamed up Tuesday to serenade a small but packed Capitol Theater. Although both artists showed what they were capable of with soft yet powerful acoustic sound, I was most impressed by the incredible talent that Gregory Alan Isakov brought to the stage.

Movie-going experiences are abundant at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For generations, students, staff and community members have had the opportunity to enjoy “Big Screen” entertainment. The medium’s landscape has changed, remodeled and adjusted along with the campus and city, and while some venues no longer exist, new ones emerged, creating the film community we see now.

The earthy, muted Capitol Theater at the Overture Center provided a canvas for the Baraboo-raised and Madison-propelled band, Phox. Organic in tone and tune, Phox surprises like a midwest spring; cloudy then pouring, dark and muddy. Interludes give way to luminescent rainbows.

With popcorn in your left hand and a soda in your right, your anticipation mounts as the previews play, a warm-up for the showing to come. A hush soon comes over the crowded theater as the last bits of chatter die out. Finally, the time has come. The film has begun.

Joel McHale, best known for his character Jeff Winger on the Emmy-winning comedy show “Community," performed at the Orpheum Theater on Saturday evening to a large and diverse crowd. McHale's performance also served as a fundraiser for the Gilda's Club Cancer Support Community and featured a raffle at the conclusion of the show.
