With the warm weather months coming into swing, there are also some theatre performances coming up in Madison to look forward to. Within the next month, the Overture Center will host Broadway’s new travelling productions of “A Bronx Tale” and “Anastasia.”

Broadway’s tenth anniversary tour of Rock of Ages travelled to the Overture Center on Feb. 7 to bestow its hilarious and harmonious blend of rock and musical theatre upon the people of Madison. While, yes, the crescendos were deafening and the performances astounding, the show was definitely closer to a 1980s rock concert than a 2018 Broadway musical, so there is a certain mindset needed in order to fully enjoy this production.
“Urinetown: The Musical” by the Undergraduate Theatre Association (UTA) and InterMission Theatre (IMT) was the best production I saw this semester. Every actor just seemed to fit perfectly with their character in this production. Usually there are one or two standout performers, but this cast was just spot-on, and I was hugely impressed by the group. The show featured student talent in other ways as well, from the lighting to the props to the direction, which all heightened the drama perfectly. Overall, it was a huge success for just a two-day run, and I’m so glad I caught it because it was completely hilarious.
The theater industry is notorious for being difficult to find steady work, no matter what aspect of the field one is pursuing. Expectations were high as I waited outside of the Orpheum Theater last Wednesday, excited to see what Mat Kearney would perform for his stop in Madison. His last album, Just Kids came out in 2015 and his last well-known hit, “Ships in the Night” dropped nearly eight years ago. I was curious to see what Kearney’s performance would unveil and I was pleasantly surprised — though he has new music, the same relaxed and upbeat songs were still there.

I entered The Bartell Theater a little before four o’clock on a Sunday afternoon. The local theater looked like everything you’d imagine it would: a modest waiting room with a family of welcoming, eager staff and an intimate black box theater for the main event. I glanced over to a slightly ajar door that revealed a cast member preparing his lines for his upcoming performance of the Shakespeare play, “Henry IV.” This play reflects a different side of Shakespeare’s writings, focusing on a rebellion and allowing for love stories to take a backseat. For those who have not spent their free time immersing themselves in Shakespeare’s works, “Henry IV” mainly revolves around two plots that eventually intersect with one pivotal battle. One plot surrounds King Henry IV, Prince Hal and Prince Harry while the other focuses on the Percys, a family of noblemen, who want to rebel against the king for refusing to pay his debt.
The Forward Theater Company kicked off its ninth annual season with Lauren Gunderson’s “I and You” at the Overture Center’s Playhouse Theater. The play opened on Thursday, Nov. 2 and will run until Nov. 19 and, trust me, this is a show you do not want to miss.
