The shortened 2020 season was a frustrating one for redshirt sophomore quarterback Graham Mertz. After a freak ankle injury sidelined Jack Coan earlier last fall, Mertz dazzled in his first career start against Illinois in week one, a Friday night kickoff that had the eyes of the nation watching the young QB. The former four-star recruit connected on 20 of 21 passes for 248 yards and five touchdowns, leading then-No.14 Wisconsin to a blowout win over the Illini.

Quarterback Jack Coan is entering the transfer portal and will be leaving the Wisconsin Football program, Coan and the team announced early last week. After a foot injury sidelined the junior for the first two months of the season, Coan did not play at any point during the 2020 regular season — even after being activated prior to a week eight matchup against No. 16 Iowa.

Wisconsin cornerback Rachad Wildgoose has left the program to declare for the 2021 NFL Draft, he announced in a tweet this past Friday morning. The announcement came as a major surprise to Wisconsin fans and Big Ten media alike, given his relatively low draft stock from a national perspective. Wildgoose will forego his senior season with the Badgers, a route few defensive standouts have chosen under Defensive Coordinator Jim Leonhard.

Veteran linebackers Zack Baun and Chris Orr aren’t in Madison anymore. The two former team leaders — now residing as members of NFL defenses — supplanted themselves in Badger lore last season with a combined 24 sacks: 12.5 for Baun and 11.5 for Orr, good for third and sixth all-time in Wisconsin single-season history, respectively.

Paul Chryst has certainly applied his calm, almost-emotionless demeanor to Wisconsin Football’s personnel decisions over his five full seasons as head coach thus far. Known for being patient with young talent, Chryst and his staff most recently redshirted five-star offensive lineman Logan Brown and the school’s highest-rated quarterback in history, Graham Mertz, last fall.

President Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday morning that he had a “productive meeting” with Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren discussing plans for a 2020 Big Ten football season this fall. Trump added that a potential plan is “on the one yard line,” though there is no indication from the Big Ten that an official plan will be announced soon.
