Last Monday the Cardinal opinion staff’s own Michael Podgers wrote an article criticizing a program put on by Badger Catholic during Valentine’s Day. The program, run outside of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, featured men giving away roses to women that had notes in them. In his piece, Mr. Podgers criticized Badger Catholic for reinforcing outdated gender stereotypes, and demeaning women by self-determining for them their inherent dignity.

After their 2010 debut Eyelid Movies, the Greenwich, N.Y.-based duo Phantogram has seen their popularity spike as countless TV shows and movies feature their music. After releasing two EPs since that 2010 album, Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter have teamed up with M.I.A.’s producer John Hill to create a stronger follow-up, Voices.

A couple weeks after the partial shutdown of the United States’ government, the American public’s confidence in our two-party system is at an all-time low. Parks are closed, tax audits have ceased, food inspections are slowed and our nation is inching closer to defaulting on our obligations. If this picture sounds bleak, it should. While this fight may have started because a few principled house Republicans decided to put their foot down on President Barack Obama’s health care law, it has transformed into a highest-of-stakes game of chicken.

Student debt. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, it’s unavoidable. And unless you’re one of the lucky few who attend on scholarship, most students at this university will graduate with some sort of debt. New developments at the highest level of the UW System administration could be making things better or worse for us all, that is, depending on whether the state you come from ends in “-sconsin.”

Last season, Wisconsin (17-9-2-2 WCHA, 23-9-2 overall) found itself heading into the postseason confident off a regular season title and with national title aspirations as the country’s No. 1 team. After falling short of that goal, this year’s Badgers will look to advance through the playoffs in the underdog role.

Win and advance. That is the mentality the No. 2 seeded and No. 6 Wisconsin women’s hockey team needed to possess in its WCHA first-round matchup with St. Cloud State this past weekend, and it did just that. The Badgers took both contests by scores of 5-0 and 4-1. The victories extended Wisconsin’s winning streak against the Huskies to 16 games.

Some tough defense and some timely scoring by the usual suspects were enough for the Wisconsin women’s hockey team (17-9-2-2 WCHA, 21-9-2 overall) to grab a weekend road sweep over the Bemidji State Beavers (5-22-1, 6-24-2).

With only four games to go in the regular season, crunch time is on for the No. 9 Wisconsin women’s hockey team (13-9-2-2 WCHA, 17-9-2 overall). And rather then the schedule getting easier, the Badgers will welcome Minnesota-Duluth (13-10-1, 14-11-3) to La Bahn Arena for the final home series of the season.

After being swept at home last weekend against border rival and top-ranked Minnesota, the Wisconsin women’s hockey team (13-9-2-2 WCHA, 17-9-2 overall) rebounded nicely to grab a pair of road wins against St. Cloud State (4-19-1, 8-20-2) this weekend. With the sweep, the Badgers have now won three straight conference games away from Madison.

After being swept on the road against archrival and top-ranked Minnesota last weekend, the Wisconsin women’s hockey team (6-6-2 WCHA, 10-6-2 overall) would usually be looking to wind down the following weekend against inferior competition. That won't be the case however, as the Badgers must regroup to welcome another rival, the No. 8 ranked North Dakota Fighting Sioux (8-4, 11-5), to La Bahn Arena.

When watching your typical hockey game, it’s not uncommon to see a few words and maybe even a couple of shoves exchanged after the whistle. Get lucky, and maybe you might see a fight between a couple of players who have become just plain sick of each other.

Traveling east for the first time this season, the Wisconsin women’s hockey team (4-2-2 WCHA, 8-4-2 overall) split their weekend road series with the Ohio State Buckeyes (8-4-0, 10-4-0). With the win, the Badgers moved up to take sole position of third place in the WCHA standings.

Faced with the prospect of falling below .500 and continuing its worst winless streak in a decade, the Wisconsin women’s hockey team (1-3-2-2 WCHA, 5-3-2 overall) responded with a pair of victories to sweep its weekend home series with New Hampshire (1-2 Hockey East, 3-4 overall).
(10/26/12 7:12am)
After getting off to a 3-0-1 start in which it outscored its opponents 21-7, many expected the Wisconsin women’s hockey team (1-3-2-2 WCHA, 3-3-2 overall) to continue its run of dominance in the sport.

As a sports fan, it’s much easier to look at things from a glass-half-full perspective when discerning the prospects of the ongoing season. Fans of this year’s Wisconsin football team (0-1 Big Ten, 3-2 overall) can take a lesson in optimism from head coach Bret Bielema, who gave off a heavy dose of good vibes at his weekly Monday press conference following a crushing 30-27 defeat to No. 22 Nebraska (1-0, 4-1) Saturday.

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, and for Wisconsin football (2-1 overall) it took all the luck under the lights of Camp Randall Stadium to come up with a heart-stopping 16-14 win over Utah State (2-1 overall) Saturday.

Gut check time is coming earlier than normal this year for the Wisconsin football team (1-1 overall). After enduring their only two regular season losses last season in heartbreaking fashion during the first pair of true road games, the Badgers must now put themselves back together after a demoralizing 10-7 road defeat to Oregon State (1-0 overall) on Saturday.
