A soon-to-be out-of-business shoe factory is saved by a fortuitous encounter with a team of drag queens, needing footwear that can meet the needs of their profession. This was all I knew about the show Kinky Boots, a Tony Award-winning broadway musical, before I had the opportunity to see it on July 12 at the Overture Center. I was extremely excited as it had been quite awhile since I’ve indulged in live theater, and I love experiencing the magic that happens on stage.

Incoming freshmen and fellow undergraduates of UW-Madison will have the opportunity to explore and appreciate some of the art and talent that Madison has to offer at Night at the Overture on Sept. 2. This is an opportunity to get out of your recently moved-in dorm room, explore State Street and bond with many of your fellow Badgers at this highly anticipated Welcome Week event. Along with thousands of other fresh-faced students on campus, this is a perfect way to begin your first Friday night in Madison! As an incoming junior, I have such positive thoughts when I reminisce on this night, and as a person who appreciates the details, I am going to share with you just exactly how this evening works.

The Overture Center for the Arts was sold-out Friday for The MadHatter’s fall concert. This a cappella group is most well-known for their classy red blazers, whimsy on stage and inconceivable solos. I attended their spring show last semester and was completely blown away by how perfected and professional this group sounded. Their performance this past weekend did not disappoint. I’ve met a majority of these guys before and after getting to know their personalities I was eager to see what type of show they had crafted for us this evening.

Friday, Nov. 6, the Orpheum Theater hosted the most visually and audibly charming performance I’ve ever seen. Wildling opened for Young the Giant and one word to describe the entire night was blissful. If you’re into newer bands, Wildling exudes an adventurous vibe, making me want to trek across the country with the band providing the soundtrack for my travels. This up-and-coming band writes very personal lyrics with noticeable heart behind every word. I am excited to hear what they’ll release on their upcoming crowd-funded EP later this year.

UW-Madison’s premier a cappella group, The MadHatters, will make their big return to the Capitol Theater at the Overture Center for their fall show Nov. 13. Quite an impressive reputation precedes these men. They performed at the White House in 2011 and 2012, Lambeau Field in 2014 and the PGA Championship this past summer. They have recorded six studio albums and toured across the United States and Mexico. The Hatters sold out the Overture Center when it reopened back in 2004, and have done so numerous times. They haven’t performed in the Capitol Theater since Spring 2014.

Freakfest is one of the most anticipated and well-known weekends in Madison. With my freshman experience behind me, I was ready for round two. MisterWives and Timeflies were performing at this year’s Capitol stage, two artists who are experts when it comes to partying and hosting an insane concert in Madtown. Last October, Timeflies rocked out at the Orpheum Theater. This Halloween weekend was MisterWives’ third time in Madison this year, after playing at the High Noon Saloon in March and then at the Majestic in September. They just can’t get enough of this city—and I can’t complain.

“Legally Blonde: The Musical” is taking center stage in Shannon Hall at the Memorial Union this weekend. I had the opportunity to see an early dress rehearsal performance and I was thoroughly impressed.

Back in August 2014 I attended one of UW-Madison’s many welcome week events, The Understudies Improv show. I happened to sit next to three random guys whom, after asking me if I knew how to sing, identified themselves as Mike Fuller, Vinnie Biskupic and David Grube, all singers in Fundamentally Sound. As a week-old freshman I was completely unaware of the tremendous support, love and following this group experiences. But over the course of this past year that has completely changed and I had no idea how much this a cappella group would be a part of my freshman year.

On Wednesday, March 4, MisterWives stopped at the High Noon Saloon in Madison, on their Our Own House tour, with openers Handsome Ghost and BØRNS. I had never been to this concert venue before, but I immediately became accustomed to it and liked the intimacy and closeness that came across even though it was a fairly large stage.

This Wednesday, MisterWives will perform at the High Noon Saloon with openers BØRNS and Handsome Ghost. Most well known for their hit “Reflections,” MisterWives has sold out the upcoming show in Madison. Last Friday I had the pleasure to chat with the talented Garrett Borns, better known as BØRNS. The interview was really enlightening and he came across as a very genuine musician.

Varsity Hall in Union South hosted the UW-Madison A Cappella Benefit Concert: Music for Mahanaim Saturday. All proceeds from the concert were given to the Wray Family at Camp Mahanaim in Les Cayes, Haiti and the Tomah Haiti, Mission Team in Tomah, Wisconsin. These groups have been providing care and education to many Haitians and continue to host medical, work and ministry teams. Gabby Enos, from Tangled Up In Blue, organized the event and gladly invited all of the a cappella groups at University of Wisconsin–Madison to perform. This included a set list of Redefined, Pitches and Notes, The MadHatters, Jewop, Tangled Up In Blue and Fundamentally Sound.

On Friday, Feb. 13, I had the opportunity to see Kap Slap at the Majestic Theatre and I was completely blown away by both the main act and the openers. Last October, I had seen Timeflies perform at the Orpheum and Kap Slap was one of the openers; this was the first time I had ever listened to his music. I arrived at Kap Slap’s concert at 9 p.m. and Coby Ashpis was up on the stage and only a crowd of about 15 people were standing at the front. I wasn’t surprised because typically a majority of the crowd doesn’t show up until much later on, understanding the openers will take up about the first two hours of the show, which they did.

While Valentine’s Day has passed, I’d like to express my opinion on the day all about love. While I have been very single for the past 18 years of my life, I’ve never felt alone or sad on this day. I was always distracted by the candy and presents my parents would give me, everyone around me was also single and, as a guy, I don’t get a lot of the pressure from the media to feel alone on Valentine’s Day.

In middle school and high school, the state and your parents forced you to attend school and do your homework. Completing the basic 12 years of schooling has become a norm and whether you liked it or not, you were expected to maintain fairly good grades and graduate with a high school diploma. Along with taking classes, you were a part of many extracurricular activities and had to deal with countless instances of petty drama. So, it’s safe to say that this was an extremely stressful time and there were enough things to complain about. I think it was justifiable to complain that you had a lab report, three papers and a research report all due Monday, as well as not having first hour open like you really wanted. You were trying to deal with your situation and venting was, and is, an appropriate way to deal with this.

Australian duo Angus & Julia Stone performed at the Majestic Theatre Oct. 17. It was my first time in this corner of the city and the location was perfect. The smaller stage and more intimate atmosphere made me feel part of this concert and right there on the stage with the performers.

This past Monday, amongst the long hours of studying for midterms, a vivacious and spirited concert took place at the Orpheum. Students and locals alike made their way down State Street to see Timeflies perform. Despite the pouring rain, this concert continued to fill up with devotees by the minute. With the scent of fresh rainfall around me, I was ready for the concert to begin.

After receiving my first CD player and a gift card to a local music store, I was the definition of both a “lost puppy” and a “kid in a candy shop.” There was so much music at my fingertips and I didn’t know what to do with any of it. I went into this music store without any idea of what I wanted and about an hour later, eight-year-old Owen walked out with a Louis Prima CD, still not knowing if he wanted it.

The word exercising is not in my vocabulary. In fact, “let’s get swole” would not be a phrase you’d ever hear me say. I’m all for staying fit and living a healthy lifestyle, but going to the gym would never be my idea of fun. As a five-foot-eight-inch male who is fairly thin, I’ve never had to exercise to keep my shape. My entire family is all relatively skinny so I’ll have to thank my genetics for what I’m working with. “Hey Genetics, is this all you’re giving me? This is how muscular of a person I’ll be? Okay, alright. That’s fine with me.”

The streets full of orange cones and cars blocking off entrances wasn’t for Madison’s never-ending construction this time, but instead to help set up for 10Fest, an event celebrating the Overture’s first ten years of existence. Typically overflowing in a sea of red towards Camp Randall, a large amount of Madison’s community was headed towards the Capitol this past Saturday. Downtown Madison was completely transformed, hosting a variety of events such as circus tents, aerial acrobatics, wagons, and many kid friendly activities.

The lack of signs at the bottom of Bascom Hill has been nagging me for a little while now. Once I read about the Tuesday hit-and-run at the crosswalk at the foot of the hill, I felt compelled to talk about it. Living around that area, I often use that crosswalk and have noticed that some drivers are either oblivious or ill-intentioned to pedestrians. But this was not so much of an issue not too long ago.
