Folk artists Gregory Alan Isakov and Blind Pilot teamed up Tuesday to serenade a small but packed Capitol Theater. Although both artists showed what they were capable of with soft yet powerful acoustic sound, I was most impressed by the incredible talent that Gregory Alan Isakov brought to the stage.

Milwaukee-based band Field Report opened for the energetic and always-boisterous Sylvan Esso Wednesday night, part of a two-night event at the Majestic. The group, whose founding members have roots with Justin Vernon and Bon Iver, played a short set of entirely new music. Lead singer Chris Porterfield performed with surprising animation. New music, which was captivating alone, was accompanied by quirky hand gestures and expressions. Give or take a few chatty crowd members, the band’s unique presence on stage lent itself to a more attentive audience for an opening band than I’m used to seeing.

Picture that cliché feeling of driving with your windows down, scream-singing on a summer day. Now take that feeling and multiply it by 100 and you have yourself a Lumineers concert. The Lumineers played a nearly sold-out show at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee Saturday night, marking the second time in less than a year the folk-rock band has graced the city with its boisterous energy.

Tuesdays and Thursdays on the second floor of Sterling Hall, students enrolled in Gender & Women’s Studies 533: Neurobiology & Traumatic Memory can be found doodling instead of taking notes. But, unlike other lectures, the instructor does not take away participation points for notebook margin art—she encourages students to keep at it.

Maybe I’m just a sucker for a quiet banjo and a British accent, but up on the balcony section of High Noon Saloon, above a canopy of stringed lights on a Thursday night, London-based folk band Bear’s Den reminded me just how possible it is to smile and shed a tear at the same time. I have been a fan of Bear’s Den for quite some time; I saw them open for Mumford & Sons at the Marcus Amphitheater in 2014. I remember my mom quietly tapping along to their set and then turning to me at the end to say, “That was just so beautiful.” That’s the thing about Bear’s Den—their gentle energy is powerful enough to captivate an audience of any size, be it a huge amphitheater or a tiny Madison bar, and that was proved to me yet again Thursday.

In many ways, going to a concert has a certain amount of predictability. The opener goes on at 8, headliner at 10. The set will have a simple backdrop. There probably won’t be any guest appearances and the performance itself won’t last longer than about 90 minutes. For Cleveland-based rapper Kid Cudi, however, “predictability” simply isn’t in his vocabulary—at least not in his live performances.
