When it comes to film adaptations of young adult literature, this year has been a long slog through mediocrity. From the impressively forgettable “Beautiful Creatures, Mortal Instruments,” and “Percy Jackson” films to the mixed bags that were “Ender’s Game” and “The Book Thief,” Hollywood has been giving credence to the bookworm mantra “the book is always better than the movie.”

When Marvel announced their live-action TV series, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,” the Internet erupted with unmitigated nerd-joy. Marvel fans dreamed of fan-favorite superheroes being introduced on their TV screens. Joss Whedon fans were delighted the creative mastermind would return to television. Marvel, Disney and ABC execs patted themselves on the back gleefully for coming up with such a clever cross-promotional machine.

No one who has lived in the city of Madison would deny that we reside in a vibrant place, brimming with activities for students. Madison is home to restaurants featuring food from more countries than the average American is probably aware of, scenic lakes and parks, a state of the art arts center, a thriving farmer’s market and more indie bookstores and coffee shops than you can shake a scarf at.

By the time the opening shot of “Gravity’” appeared on the screen I already knew that I’d made a terrible mistake. Being a typical, vehicle-lacking college student I decided to see the film at Sundance cinemas to avoid the hour-long bus odyssey needed to get to an IMAX screen. Unfortunately, Sundance was only screening the film in 2D. It seemed like the logical choice at the time, but I now see the error of my ways. I totally repent to director Alfonso Cuaron for not seeing his masterwork of digital imagery on a screen that could do it justice.

In anticipation of the fall film season, two of the Cardinal’s film writers—Kailee Andrews and Austin Wellens—compiled a list of the five movies for which they’re each most excited to see over the next few months.

Just like Tony Stark’s suits, Shane Black’s “Iron Man 3” is all about piecing together the moving parts. And after 2012’s “The Avengers” he’s got a fair amount of questions and repercussions to deal with. The opening of the film finds a Tony Stark plagued by insomnia and anxiety attacks as he attempts to reconcile his previously logical world with the bombastic events he took part in and witnessed in in New York City with his new superfriends.

Either Joss Whedon is operating on some definition of “vacation” that the rest of us are unfamiliar with, or we’ve just been doing it wrong. After seeing Whedon’s modern film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” I tend to side with the second option.

It’s a familiar story. Five college kids head out to a secluded cabin for a weekend of debauchery and shenani… no wait. Actually, in Fede Alvarez’s “Evil Dead” the responsible 20 somethings are at the cabin out of friendly concern for one of their own, Mia (Jane Levy), a drug addict who, during her last overdose, had a close brush with death, motivating this group bonding/ interven-cation.

Being the new entry in a beloved fictional universe is never an enviable position. “The Hobbit,” “Prometheus” and “The Amazing Spiderman” all suffered criticism not only due to their own shortcomings, but also as “disappointments” based on the high expectations set by their beloved predecessors.

Coming at us amidst a slew of Hollywood fairytale retellings, Bryan Singer’s “Jack the Giant Slayer” stands as an above average achievement in a mediocre trend. To put it in context, it’s at roughly the same quality as the CGI-extravaganzas that were “Alice in Wonderland” and “Snow White and the Huntsman.” However, it could be argued that it boasts more appealing leads and more effective storytelling than other recent storybook-based blockbusters.

Released just in time for Valentine’s Day, director Jonathan Levine’s “Warm Bodies” introduces us to a fairly cookie-cutter post-apocalyptic world in which the undead have overrun society and the remaining humans are holed up in whatever fortified areas they can find, just trying to sustain themselves.

Sundance Film Festival. The most important film festival in America. A time in which promising new voices in film, famous celebrities, fresh-faced film students, rich retirees, artsy hipsters, studio bigwigs and people who just so happen to live nearby can mingle peacefully while binging on the latest independent films in picturesque Park City, Utah.
