“Are you sick of this sh*t yet?” reads the first sentence of Pitchfork’s “Top 10 Albums of 1999” article published in 2001. “...Let's not forget the New York Times' incredibly out- of- touch list of the 25 best albums of all time. (One word: No.)” The introduction reads like an angry college student madly pounding at their keyboard, more concerned with establishing a flippant attitude towards mainstream music journalism than introducing a list for the best albums of the year. A Pitchfork article beginning in such a manner in the year 2015 would raise eyebrows with its complete lack of professionalism, yet it was this exact attitude that propelled the website into the cornerstone for independent music journalism that so many regard it as today.

In movies and TV shows, high schools often feature two stereotypes: band nerds and jocks. Dan Voltz would have been the character that defies the societal norms, a Troy Bolton-esque protagonist that excels athletically and musically. Maybe he’s not exactly like Zac Efron’s character from “High School Musical,” but Voltz has a love for both music and football.

In 2012, presidential candidates are expected raise and spend
approximately eight billion dollars in campaign contributions, an
increase of 20 percent from the 2008 election.President Barack
Obama alone is expected to raise about one billion dollars for his
campaign, and don’t expect that money to come from teaching unions
or the ACLU; despite Obama’s promise of liberal change, his 2008
campaign accepted more money from the financial sector than anyone
in history.

One day last winter break, I was in the mall with a friend and he
dragged me into American Eagle. Like most stores in the mall, there
was music playing, serving as a backdrop for the shopping
experience. I looked at the screen, and much to my surprise, I saw
indie bands playing, decked out in plaid and sporting wayfarer
sunglasses. But when I really thought about it, it made sense. The
breezy music these bands create perfectly fits the lifestyle and
hip image the brand was trying to market. This was an eye-opening
moment for me, making me realize how far indie's reach has
extended, from urban centers where ""cool"" is born to a mall in
Middle America.

""You should be rolling up by now / Locate your lighters."" These
are familiar instructions for anyone who has listened to Curren$y
and knows of his prolific weed habit. His latest project was
released on 4/20, but whether you share his passion or not, there's
plenty to enjoy in Curren$y's music. Curren$y's appeal lies in his
casual, laid-back, and somewhat goofy persona and rap style.
Listening to him provides a window into his self-described ""Jet
Life,"" which is filled with women, weed, old-school American cars
and Jordan sneakers, among other things. These topics aren't
revolutionary or new. However, brushing him aside as run of the
mill stoner rap is a huge mistake. He has the uncanny ability to
take rap clichés and put his own interesting spin on them, spitting
everyday tales of living the ""Jet Life.""

W.A.R. (We Are Renegades) marks Pharoahe Monch's third
solo release since 1999. Although his output has been minimal, both
albums have been quality releases. From his debut to 2007's
Desire, he switched from a lyrical, battle rap style and
adapted a more political message. His transformation also included
more live instrumentation. W.A.R. continues with the
political tendencies of Desire and calls for change.

Saigon's story of major label struggles is a common one in today's
rap game. Saigon was an up-and-coming East Coast emcee in the early
2000s who, fresh out of prison, looked ready to conquer the rap
industry. His hype even led him to a role playing himself in the
HBO series Entourage. However, he parted ways with his label before
he could release an album, due to Atlantic Records trying to market
him in ways he was unhappy with. After years of releasing mix
tapes, he was signed to super-producer Just Blaze's label Fort
Knocks Entertainment. Finally, he released his long awaited,
shelved debut Greatest Story Never Told.

Like taxes and brussel sprouts, no one likes the cable com- -
pany and a bill passed in the state Assembly seeks to solidify that
sentiment. On the surface, the proposal, SB 107 or AB 207, seeks to
eliminate local monopolies cable service providers hold over
Wisconsin's municipalities and turn oversight over to the state
government.
