Through the first eight months we have witnessed horrifying terrorist attacks both domestically and abroad, a civil war that has left millions in a state of crisis, an attempted military coup, an Olympic games in a politically torn nation and great political and racial tensions here in the United States.

In recent months, the debate over which bathroom facilities transgender people in the United States should use in public spaces has become one that has divided Americans. States such as North Carolina have already made up their minds on the matter, and have passed legislation preventing transgender students from using restrooms and locker rooms that do not match their biological sex. Even here in Wisconsin, bills similar to that in North Carolina have been proposed, and the discussion over them is widely thought to be opened again when session begins again this fall.

Last night, the Kohl Center hosted an extremely passionate crowd. A crowd that had gathered as a result of Sen. Bernie Sanders’, I-Vt., campaign rally, one that came only days before the primary on Tuesday. I was fortunate enough to be in attendance at this event, and Madison was most definitely “feeling the Bern.”

Following the Iowa caucus Feb. 1, tensions within both parties have already begun to peak. While we wait for the voting to resume once again in New Hampshire on Tuesday, debates between everyday Americans as to which candidate is the proper one for their respective parties have already turned heated.

They’re fascinated by the cutting edges of technology, and many of them are also fascinated with the idea of bridging technology and the human body.

A global survey on charitable giving was conducted in 135 nations, and very well may provide us a sense of faith in humanity. In 2014, the World Giving Index examined whether people volunteered their time to an organization, offered assistance to someone they did not know who needed it or donated money to a charity. Around 2.3 billion people worldwide reported helping a stranger over a time period of one month, and 1.4 billion people reported that they donated money to a charitable cause in 2013.

Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia are literally choking under a thick haze of wildfire smoke caused by the yearly burning of forests for the production of pulp, paper and palm oil on the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan in Indonesia. The smoky haze that has engulfed these nations had been described by the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics as a “crime against humanity.” Schools have been closed, roadways shut down and half a million cases of acute respiratory infection have been reported since July.

Russian warplanes in Western Syria have carried out several airstrikes that are believed to have killed dozens of civilians. According to a Human Rights Watch report, these bombings appear to be war crimes committed by the Russians. These aerial attacks took place in the northern part of Homs governorate Oct. 15th as Russian and Syrian planes were supporting a ground offensive against rebel troops.

Last month in the White House Rose Garden, President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping stood side-by-side and hosted a news conference on the topic of corporate cyber attacks. In the news conference, President Obama stated that both China and the United States would refrain from cyber attacks aimed at pilfering company intellectual or trade secrets for commercial advantage. However, events following the news conference are raising questions on whether this agreement is going to be upheld.

A historic and highly controversial event occurred on Saturday, Oct. 2: Monsignor Krysztof Olaf Charamsa, a Polish priest who served with the Vatican’s doctrinal arm, was released from his duties within the Vatican. This dismissal came following Charamsa’s public announcement of his homosexuality.

Pope Francis has been a highly popular and controversial papal head, as evidenced by his seemingly “radical” stances on issues such as the environment, the migrant crisis and trickle-down economics, instead stressing forgiveness for lifestyle choices and topics that the Catholic Church has traditionally looked down upon, such as homosexuality or abortion. As such, his tour to the United States is considered a big turning point for international affairs and his relationship with American Catholics.
