The Wisconsin women's basketball team, bolstered by a 20-5 rally in
the final ten minutes of the second half, defeated Northwestern

the Big Ten. The win is the third straight for the Badgers (7-2,

Southern Records' five piece, Check Engine, recently made a stop
at Madison's Club 770, leaving the audience with pounding hearts
and throbbing ears. Incorporating two members of Sweep the Leg
Johnny, Check Engine gives off more energy than a snorted pixie
stick with their swooping hooks and pounding beats demanding
attention. The Daily Cardinal recently spoke with lead vocalist and
guitarist Joe Cannon about Check Engine's rock style and song
writing, the Chicago music scene and the definition of pop.

Things they are a-changin'. Madison is in the midst of a huge
transition with respect to its art scene. With the highs and lows
of recent years, the near future seems to hold vast improvement for
the music scene and possibly the performance and visual arts.

Is it just me or has the word 'diva' been thrown around too
loosely lately? I watched a lot of VH1 over the summer and it
seemed that whoever was making creative decisions wanted anyone
with a whiny voice and breasts to be crowned as a diva. Does anyone
even know what the definition of diva is? I guess it implies the
title of a powerful woman in the entertainment world with an even
more powerful voice and/or lyrical message. Maybe it just implies
that a diva is a woman who has sold millions of records and can buy
fancy outfits. Maybe a diva is just a female sex symbol, or maybe
it's a combination of all of these.

Live entertainment'there's nothing like it. Whether you're
buckling your favorite punk belt and lacing up your Doc Martens or
putting on a black turtleneck and pleather pants, Madison pretty
much attracts bands that fit your mold. There's no question that
bands are coming into Madtown, but where are they plugging in their
amps? Madison is home to several live entertainment venues, each
with its own trademark characteristics.

Los Angeles has been the promised land for many musicians
throughout the ages. It seems no matter who you are, if your band
builds a following on the West Coast club circuit, people talk and
record labels take notice. In the case of Black Rebel Motorcycle
Club, lots of labels came calling. But in the end Virgin Records
was the only company willing to give Black Rebel the creative
freedom it desired. This freedom is quite evident on the band's
self-titled debut album, which displays Black Rebel's total control
of the recording and producing process conducted in its home
studio.

In the vast world of art and entertainment, changes occur on a
daily basis. There are intricate balances of knowledge, power and
public taste that can easily shift and inevitably shape what
happens around us. These shifts are currently right below our feet
in this fine city we call Madison. Unfortunately many of these
changes go unnoticed, simply because of a lack of attention or a
lack of coverage. This semester my column aims to investigate these
shifts and changes and to discover who has a voice in the Madison
art world.

Carl Johns is a man of many hats. In addition to perhaps his
most visible position as frontman for local favorite Noahjohn, the
country-singed band who he has lead through two full-length
recordings and several tours, he also runs his own record label and
booking agency, Speakeasy.

Men in tight pants running around an open grassy field. Leather
slapping their hands, heads crashing together. This can only mean
one thing--it's Super Bowl time. There is something so intriguing
about the mixture of violence, competition and sport that football
displays. It's such a delicate balance between game and infliction
of physical pain.
