When I decided to write about UW’s Housing sustainability projects, I didn’t expect to get a two for one during my interview, but indeed that is what I got. The program manager for sustainability is a brand new position in the housing department, acting as a testament to the importance of sustainability on this campus, and Laura Shere is the first person to hold this esteemed title.

Even with a few weeks to go in 2012, it is pretty safe to say that people will look back at this year and realize that it was one hell of a time for movies.

Of all the working filmmakers today, Ang Lee may be one of the most diverse. He has tackled martial arts in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” the superhero genre in “Hulk,” Jane Austen in his adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility” and most recently, Woodstock in his 2009 film “Taking Woodstock.”

Writer-director David O. Russell is on a roll. His 2010 film “The Fighter” showcased some excellent acting, with Christian Bale and Melissa Leo taking home some awards hardware for their efforts. His previous films, including “I Heart Huckabees” and “Three Kings,” were but a preview of his now cemented talents.

Based on David Mitchell’s 2004 bestselling novel of the same name, “Cloud Atlas” puts a capital A in ambition and B in bold.

With “Argo,” Ben Affleck has forever demonstrated that he is an extremely skilled director. His acting roles in “Armageddon,” “Pearl Harbor,” “Daredevil” and “Paycheck,” the roles that helped to make him a movie star, appear so far removed from his career these past few years that it seems impossible that these two Afflecks are the same person.

Five years removed from his 2007 masterpiece, “There Will Be Blood,” director-writer Paul Thomas Anderson returns with “The Master,” a haunting and dreamy film containing a pair of superb performances and perplexing ideas.

French director André Téchiné’s 2011 film “Unforgivable,” which premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight selection of last year’s Cannes Film Festival, strives to show life’s jagged edges but is ultimately weighed down by the filmmakers’ inability to fully flesh out characters and story. It is a film that gets better as it goes along, yet its superficialities still hinder it from reaching its full potential.

Fairly recently The Washington Post, in response to a previous story that noted the general decline in collegiate student study efforts, published another story that featured the universities in which college students study the most. Perhaps to the surprise of outsiders, but certainly to no surprise to its attendees, UW-Madison made it to the top of the list.

With finals week fast approaching, many UW-Madison students will experience stress associated with the pressure to perform well on exams, an unfortunate reality considering the fact that everyone is extremely burnt out from school around this time.

Last week, UW Transportation Services announced a 10 percent cut in transportation services on the UW campus due to a budget deficit.

Last week, UW-Madison students received an e-mail with a survey from the Division of Continuing Studies regarding the possibility of UW-Madison implementing winter break classes. The plan consists of “offering a selection of in-person and online courses for one-to-three credits during the three weeks prior to the start of the spring semester.” For example, a three-credit course would meet roughly three hours a day every weekday for three weeks, and the tuition costs for the classes would be in addition to fall and spring tuition charges.

After the announcement of the June 5 gubernatorial recall election, Wisconsin voters may have a few more reasons to be upset with Gov. Scott Walker. Although I have felt indifferent and even somewhat annoyed by the recall talk throughout the state, recent legislation signed by Walker in secrecy throughout the past week has made me think otherwise.

As many Wisconsin residents and UW-Madison students are aware of by now, U.S. representative and presidential hopeful Ron Paul will visit the Madison community this Thursday for a town hall-style event at the UW-Madison Stock Pavilion.

Numerous lawmakers throughout the state of Wisconsin will be up for recall this spring and summer. In about 60 days, two more names may—somehow—be added to that list.

Last week, the Wisconsin state Senate failed to pass an important piece of legislation for workers. This legislation proposed a $1.5 billion iron ore mine to be built in the northern part of the state that died because Republicans failed to gather a final vote despite holding a 17-16 majority.
