Despite a historically strong campaign in his first year as a starter, Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon finished second in the 80th annual Heisman Trophy balloting Saturday behind Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota.
Dear Mr. Scientist,
While Wisconsin hockey fans have grown accustomed to the comfortable seating and the rowdy Crease Creatures at the Kohl Center since its existence in late 90s, the program started the makings of their dynasty elsewhere in Madison—Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The current Wisconsin hockey team will relive the Wisconsin glory days at the building former head coach Bob Johnson built this weekend, where they will look to add another WCHA championship banner against St. Cloud State. With the Badgers closing their season at the Coliseum this weekend, it is only appropriate to revisit the once-great spectrum in college hockey.
Philosopher Karl Marx urged his supporters to understand that someone is always benefitting from every bad situation. This ideal is applicable to the Manti Te’o hoax. Te’o, the college football star, allegedly deceived the nation by making up a girlfriend who succumbed to leukemia in order to bolster his image. As it turned out, Te’o was just supremely naïve and did not intentionally deceive the public. The entire situation became a waste of time for everyone involved, but as Marx taught, there were a few who benefitted. As a result of Te’o’s scandal, MTV’s controversial show, “Catfish,” which deals with many of the same themes found in Te’o’s case, has become increasingly popular among young viewers. In addition, like the Te’o scandal, “Catfish” proved to be a waste of time for the public, as it is unethical and amoral.
It’s never easy standing out on a defense that includes redshirt junior linebacker Chris Borland and redshirt senior linebacker Mike Taylor. It’s even harder when that same defense involves a smothering front four that has held opposing rushers to just 3.5 yards per carry.
Former Badger football lineman Jake Wood, the co-founder and president of a nonprofit organization that deploys military veterans to aid in disaster relief internationally, will be this year's mid-year commencement speaker at the ceremonies taking place on Dec. 18 at the Kohl Center.
I figure my last column is a good place to talk about the future of music. We continue to stand at something of a precipice, overlooking the cavernous possibilities of technology and the implications they might hold in how future generations interpret art.

The Wisconsin volleyball team (3-9 Big Ten, 14-9 overall) had a split weekend, as it shut out Michigan State (3-8 Big Ten, 11-11 overall) in three sets and fell to No. 15 Michigan (9-3 Big Ten, 20-4 overall) in four.
As poor college students, quality often takes a back seat to quantity when it comes to liquor purchases. We might not go for Fleischmann's like we did back in freshman year, but it's not like we're going to throw down $25 for a liter of Jose Cuervo or Tanqueray.
A fire caused an explosion at the construction site of the new Target store at Hilldale Mall Wednesday morning.
Believe this: I'm a pretty laid-back guy. Nothing really upsets the Kyle Equilibrium too much, especially when I'm kickin' it with New Jersey rock 'n' rollers Titus Andronicus.
Liberal advocacy group One Wisconsin Now obtained recordings they claim prove a conspiracy between the Republican Party of Wisconsin and various Tea Party organizations to target students and minorities in a ""voter caging"" effort.
Just as the Fourth of July marks America's independence from England, so too does Welcome Week for incoming freshmen from their childhood homes, families and daily routines. This momentous occasion is coupled with excitement and anxiety about meeting new people, surviving dorm life and navigating the various buildings on campus.
The beginning of my environmental education as an elementary schooler started with Reduce and ended with Recycle. Back in the day environmental education consisted of little more than teaching kids about the three Rs. If global warming existed in the early and mid-90s, I never heard about it. I remember learning about the rainforest, but never about deforestation. I do think I was introduced to the ozone layer, but only because it had a hole in it.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Tuesday downtown Madison bars could continue their policy of not providing drink specials after 8 p.m. on weekends.
The Wisconsin softball team lost 3-of-4 games at home over the weekend, but a win in their final game has given them confidence as they prepare to face Northern Iowa Wednesday.
