In the continued aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, people on both the left and right side of the political spectrum have proposed various solutions to the country’s economic woes. Although the Republicans and Democrats offer different answers, their views don’t differ very much in terms of the governing theory behind them. Instead of the ‘Republicrat’ false dichotomy, a few congressmen, such as Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., and former congressman Ron Paul, R-Texas, have returned to basic economic theory to create prosperity.

In recent years, the Scandinavian countries have become a glistening castle in the distance for leftists. Heralded as a shining example of the success of socialism, leftists have propped up these countries as proof that their policies will work. However, the economies and standards of living in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark are not as great as liberals make them out to be. Moreover, the economies of these countries are a far cry from the “democratic socialism” espoused by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and his supporters.

The First Amendment to the Constitution, found in the Bill of Rights, famously protects the right to assemble. Groups across campus and across the country have fully utilized this right. Groups such as Black Lives Matter, PETA and even Westboro Baptist Church lead massive protests. While the right to assemble is important, organizations have seemed to overlook one key word within the First Amendment: That word is peaceably. The First Amendment protects the right to peaceably assemble, not violently assemble. Unfortunately, many protesters and student activists seem to have forgotten this important word and many protests have taken a turn for the worst.

For those of you who follow my weekly articles, you are well aware of the fact that I am not afraid to write about the most controversial of issues. As such, it should be of no surprise to anyone that I have received a lot of criticism. It’s tough being a writer, especially one that likes to go where others will not. Yet, I enjoy every single moment of it.

In 1968, Pope Paul VI sat down to write what would become one of the biggest influences in contemporary Catholic moral teaching. Facing major societal pressure as a result of the "sexual revolution," many thought Pope Paul was going to lift the Church’s ban on contraception. However, when the ink had dried, the hands and mind of Pope Paul had written the most elegant and prophetic secular defense and reaffirmation of the Church’s doctrine on contraceptives.

Time and again during this election cycle, particularly from the left, we have heard the same narrative. “[Women] still make 77 cents for every dollar a man earns,” proclaimed President Obama during his 2016 State of the Union address. It has also become a central issue in presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Admittedly, if institutionalized sexism is present in our country we must do everything possible to eliminate it. The problem is that the gender pay gap doesn’t actually exist; it is merely a false narrative designed to appeal to the emotions of American citizens. At the same time, it is diverting attention away from serious issues that the feminist movement should be focused on.

As a student at UW-Madison, you’ve likely heard time and time again about the value of a liberal arts education. Faculty speak about the idea of a liberal arts education as if it is some kind of divine concept that is omnipresent in every curriculum, classroom and heart of each student. What exactly is a liberal arts education? What makes it so desirable over other forms of education?

In our post-Citizens United government, corruption is perfectly legal, and we let politicians get away with it. According to the Sunlight Foundation, from 2007 to 2012, the top 200 most politically active companies in America spent approximately $5.8 billion influencing the legislators who are meant to represent the American public. Those 200 companies received $4.4 trillion in taxpayer support, government benefits and tax breaks for their efforts. While big money special interests laugh all the way to the bank, the American public is left penniless.

Patriotism. A word that inspires hope, respect and a willingness to forever defend one’s nation. The often forgotten emotion it inspires is the fear to criticize the American government. People criticize the government all the time but only when it’s doing something “un-American.” Suppressed are the criticisms against the government for doing something that has become synonymous with patriotism: “spreading democracy and freedom.” Even worse is suggesting something that is “non-American” that may, in fact, be right.

Let’s get something clear. Being opposed to same-sex marriage does not make you homophobic. Being opposed to abortion does not mean you hate women. Supporting marijuana legalization does not make you a hippie. Supporting climate change legislation does not make you a tree-hugger.

For the past hour, I’ve been staring at a blank Google Doc page. My fingers are lying motionless at the helm of the keyboard. My mind is wandering into space. Not a single idea is coming to mind.

It’s an overcast Sunday morning in Madison’s Brittingham Park. Out of the calm atmosphere comes a loud, “Brooms up!” Two hordes of college students charge each other at full speed with narrow PVC pipes between their legs. Dodgeballs whiz through the air. Juking out opponents left and right, one player throws a volleyball through a large hoop as his team celebrates their score.

Monday night, Democrats across Wisconsin cheered as Gov. Scott Walker officially announced he was ending his 2016 presidential campaign. The decision came after recent polls showed Walker with less than 1 percent of the vote. However, if you are a Democrat, now is not the time to be celebrating. In fact, you should be bracing yourself for the worst. It all comes down to one man: Marco Rubio.

Hank Green, a famous blogger and vlogger on Youtube, once stated regarding incarceration, “We send people to prison to be punished, and to prevent them from doing bad things again, and to deter others from breaking the law. Punishment, corrections and deterrence.” Each aspect of this three-fold system must be effective and all aspects must work in unison to create an efficient institution against crime. This does not necessarily mean that each aspect must be equal in how it is emphasized, leading to the question of which should be emphasized and how we go about doing so to provide the maximum level of utility to society.
