Emmett Lockwood has lived in the Open House Living Learning Community (LLC) in Phillips Residence Hall at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for two years, first as a resident and now as the community’s House Fellow. House Fellows, a term for what is commonly known as a resident assistant, provide an essential role in university dorms — enforcing policy and building community. There are approximately 200 House Fellows across campus.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Gender and Sexuality Campus Center (GSCC) works to support and foster community among UW’s trans and queer students. The organization planned a day-long community-building event and trans film festival on Oct. 24, the same time as conservative commentator Matt Walsh’s talk at Memorial Union. GSCC organized several other initiatives throughout the fall to support LBGTQ+ students on campus.

In October, The Daily Cardinal was saddened to announce that Chancellor Becky Blank has decided to leave the University of Wisconsin-Madison at the end of the school year to become Northwestern’s next president. The step down was taken not for professional reasons, but to make a break from the hunky and thoughtful Buckingham U. Badger and run away with longtime love Willie the Wildcat.

All around the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the leaves are highlighting a change in the seasons as students bundle up for the dropping temperatures and gradually adapt to their fall schedules. Especially with the return of in-person classes, students flooding throughout campus during passing periods, and game days featuring droves of fans in the streets eager to get to Camp Randall by “Jump Around,” we, as students, are finally given the opportunity to settle into a routine. However, what do we do when the face of our university announces she is changing her colors?

From Gordons to State Street, Witte to the Hub, the way in which students view the University of Wisconsin-Madison is greatly impacted by the place in which they live. A naive freshman immediately feels overwhelmed by the immensity of this institution as they are swarmed by thousands of students walking from place to place. The community that is created by freshmen dorms allows for these intimidated individuals to make a large campus feel a little bit smaller.
