In Harlan County, Ky., the history of labor struggles runs deep. The county, once a center of coal mining in the U.S., was the setting of the one of the largest labor actions in the country’s history. At the outset of the Great Depression, miners attempting to organize under the United Mine Workers faced almost every union busting tactic in the book.

In preparation for our first fully online semester of college, my roommates and I sprung for the faster of the AT&T and internet packages. This package included a complimentary subscription to HBO Max. While the speed of the wireless connection may have been overstated, HBO’s vast library of original content became a TV staple in my apartment. I watched several recommended titles in the early months, but no show has quite dominated my binging hours like The Sopranos.

Early last week, Alex Lasry, the 33-year-old son of billionaire Wall Street baron and Bucks owner Marc Lasry, announced his intention to seek the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in 2022. The seat is currently occupied by gaffe-prone Trump loyalist Ron Johnson, so the Democrats will be gunning hard for it come election season.

Since the Republicans flipped the Senate in the 2014 midterm elections and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was elected majority leader, he has been seen as a one man opposition. The invincible Grim Reaper of any left-of-center legislation that dares rear its head in the Senate chambers. Sen. McConnell’s political acumen, honed by years in Senate leadership, is not in question but his reputation as an immovable obstacle is far too easy an excuse for feckless Democrats to quit before the fight even starts.

I’m going to be honest and say I hadn’t seen any of “The Boys” until September when a good friend recommended it to me. The day after he told me I should check it out, I watched the first episode. Then the second. And then it only seemed right to watch the third. Within four days I had blown through the first season and half and was eagerly awaiting the next episode’s release on Amazon Prime Video.

A plot by fanatical extremists to kidnap a politician and bring them to a safe house to “stand trial” reads like something out of a history book or international news. But, it wasn’t Confederate spies in a long ago war or armed rebels in a far away country; instead, it was a group of right-wing terrorists in Michigan who made news recently after being charged with plotting to kidnap the state’s governor.

On July 16, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported that federal law enforcement agents dressed in camo and with no identifying crests, badges or name tags were arresting peaceful and law-abiding protesters in Portland.

In exploring the endless titles for recommended viewing during quarantine I came across a recommendation for the FX crime drama "Justified." After binging the whole series in an unhealthy amount of time, I found that when I looked deeper, the series provides an interesting look into America’s police culture and when police are and aren’t justified.

After the dramatic defeats of the Reagan Revolution, centrist triangulation reigned supreme in the Democratic Party, but, in recent years, the left wing has seen a renaissance in the United States.

For as long as I was able to stay up past my bedtime, I’ve watched Saturday Night Live. When I was younger, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg were my comedic idols. My parents would show me old SNL skits from the heyday of Steve Martin, Gilda Radner and Billy Crystal. Obviously a comedy sketch show that is over 40 years-old is going to go through its highs and lows but recently I came to the realization that SNL doesn’t seem to know what it is anymore.

The sharp racial disparity in homelessness has quickly become a prominent issue in Madison politics — and city officials offered varying explanations and solutions for the imbalance.
