Mere days after announcing its inception, J. Cole dropped the unexpected album, KOD (an initialism for Kids on Drugs, King Overdosed and Kill Our Demons). After his hotly anticipated — though largely disappointing — 4 Your Eyez Only record dropped last year, many have been critical of both the rapper’s fanbase and his legitimacy as “one of the greats.”

Rap trio Flatbush Zombies have been carving their way through the soundwaves with trippy personas and outgoing personalities since 2010. Thanks to a flurry of hard-hitting mixtapes that capitalized on the group’s acid-laced rhymes with ear-grabbing instrumentals, the trio added a breath of fresh air to the rap game.

Being in a band that steadily produces good music for a decade is an accomplishment of epic proportions. Doing so for 50 years seems downright impossible, yet with an absolute masterpiece of a project, Judas Priest returns in peak form with their 18th album titled Firepower.

The oddly creative JPEGMAFIA takes an unapologetic swing for the fences with his latest album Veteran and manages to present a strong yet flawed product.

Ivet Castelo Torres, Catalan indie film co-director and co-producer of the upcoming film, “Ojos Negros,” sat down with me last month for an interview. Over some classic paella and a glass of wine, she discussed the movie’s plot and intricacies of shooting in Spain, as well as some of the unique properties of pursuing an education in filmography.

Fans of “Rick and Morty,” myself included, may not have expected the duo to return Logic’s favor of a brief cameo, as he did last season on the popular show. The grandfather-grandson duo announced last week that Logic was dropping a sequel to his well-received Bobby Tarantino mixtape that would be “Good ol’ Atlanta-style club rap.”

Listeners of Black Panther: The Album may recall “Paramedic!” as one of the record’s highlights. It starred a vibrant and enthusiastic rap group out of Vallejo, Calif., who made a noticeable buzz for all the right reasons.

Indonesian rapper Rich Brian (formerly Rich Chigga) makes a well-produced attempt at proving he is an emcee capable of being more than just a singles artist. With his first album Amen, Brian presents a mediocre package of 14 tracks and a 44-minute run time.

Daniel Goldstein — better known by his stage name, Lane 8 — has delivered a hallmark of infectious beats and entrancing harmonies with the neatly packaged album, Little by Little.

UW-Madison student Kenneth Cole launched his freshman project The Audacity under pen name K. Sankofa. With a runtime of around one hour, the mixtape is an energized yet eerily peaceful slew of soulful melodies and meaningful rap. Its central themes revolve around spirituality, family ties, institutional racism and the shortcomings of lackluster UW-Madison policy.

Emekwanem Biosah, a Houston rapper dubbed Maxo Kream, showcases a life of brutish violence, dark deeds and unapologetic ruthlessness over the course of a roughly 40-minute-long album that sets the tone for future projects. Listeners can expect a stone-cold seriousness and anti-hero likeability from Maxo as well as a handful of tracks worth revisiting.

A little over a month ago a new streetwear apparel boutique called August opened on State Street. The owner and UW-Madison alum Rob Bowhan sat down with me to discuss his store and why he made the decision to return to his hometown, of all places.

Over the weekend, Jidenna dropped a surprise EP titled Boomerang. Some may remember the billboard-charting, electro R&B hit, “Classic Man” from 2015. Since then, Jidenna has pushed out some great work and performed at a slew of festivals, including this past summer’s Lollapalooza in Chicago. Fans of the Netflix show Luke Cage will likely remember Jidenna’s appearance with his stellar performance of the melodic single, “Long Live The Chief.”

The last time Foo Fighters played in Madison, George W. Bush was president, “Brokeback Mountain” won film of the year and I was somewhere navigating middle school. Clearly, much has changed since then, yet for the Foo Fighters it's been in all of the best ways. This past Tuesday evening, the Foo Fighters cemented their place as rock gods to a sold out crowd in the Kohl Center.

Rapper Big K.R.I.T. dropped a compelling and unapologetically southern double album that might just walk away as the best album to emerge this fall season.

Radric Davis, better known by his stage name Gucci Mane, has dropped his 11th studio album titled Mr. Davis by GUWOP Enterprises and Atlantic Records. The Atlanta trap-rap pioneer has been in stride since his 2016 release from prison. Noteworthy albums like Everybody Looking and The Return of East Atlanta Santa marked a more mature — and thankfully sober — Gucci, and now, every aspect of the rapper's music has improved.

Marilyn Manson rings in his 10th studio album, Heaven Upside Down, with all of the showmanship, attention grabbing theatrics and occasional nihilistic ballads those familiar with Manson's past work can come to expect from the self-proclaimed “Antichrist Superstar.”

Most tattoo artists gravitate towards a style that is well known and typically popular. From the classic American Traditional to newer styles like Watercolor, these existing genres are the expected responses when asking an artist their preferred art styles. However, this is not always the case, as shown by Iron Quill co-owner Travis Browning and his dedication to a style called Art Nouveau.

The Swedish EDM duo Galantis, responsible for the feel-good hit single "Peanut Butter Jelly" and anti-bullying track "No Money," return for their sophomore album, The Aviary. Though this is only the duo's second album together, they are by no means novices of the industry.
