Barilla launches ‘Home Away From Home’ campaign to provide free pasta to students

As part of National Pasta Month, Barilla will launch a ‘Home Away From Home Kitchen’ on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus that will provide students with a free frozen pasta dish on Oct. 25 and Oct. 26.

Registration for the free meals opened on Tuesday. Students were able to pick from four different meal options, including lasagna, rigatoni carbonara, spaghetti and meatballs and macaroni and cheese. They also had the option to customize meals, giving some the opportunity to recreate their loved one’s recipes while away at school.

Barilla launched the free meal campaign to help combat homesickness. In a study they conducted, the company found that 55% of students ranked homemade meals as one of the top things they will miss from home when attending college.

Another study conducted on university students found that 94% said they felt homesick within the first 10 weeks of school

UW-Madison was selected for this campaign for the high numbers of out-of-state students. According to UW-Madison’s 2020-2021 Data Digest, UW-Madison’s student body is 44% of out-of-state students. The new freshman class in 2020 was 48% out-of-state students.

Meal registration closed on Friday, Oct. 22.
