Partnership between UW System officials and Wisconsin’s Native tribes hopes to boost enrollment and graduation rates of Native students throughout Wisconsin.

UW System, Native tribes aim to increase enrollment, graduation rates

UW System officials and Wisconsin’s 12 Native Nation tribes are at the beginning of an effort to increase enrollment and improve graduation rates of indigenous students.

The tribal consultation policy will provide the stepping stones to combat the lack of indigenous students pursuing degrees within the System.

Conversations about Native Nations’ cultures, traditions, beliefs, governance, laws, codes, regulations and protocols are reflections of the ideal dialogue UW System officials are hoping to create, according to the press release.

“Working in partnership with Native Nations can help us craft a successful educational experience for Native students,” said UW System President Ray Cross. “With most Native students being dual citizens of both Wisconsin and their Native Nations, the UW System has an obligation to build and strengthen our partnership.”

Their collaboration matches the Arizona Board of Regents’ plan adopted in 2016, which lead to discussions on land use, education policy and research between Arizona’s public universities and American Indian nations.

628 Native students were enrolled at UW System schools in Fall 2017, making up 0.4 percent of total enrollment.
