Retention and recruitment rates return to normal after UW experiences budget and tenure changes

The recently released 2016-17 faculty recruitment efforts document shows that staff retention and recruitment rates are returning to normal.

Retention and recruitment rates return to normal after UW experiences budget and tenure changes

UW-Madison’s retention and recruitment of staff is returning to normal after the university faced budget cuts and tenure policy changes in the previous two years, according to a 2016-17 faculty recruitment efforts document.

The report, released by the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, shows that the retention rates, or the number of staff who accept offers from other universities, is on track with the average rate from years past.

Recruitment of new faculty from other institutions has also bounced back after hitting a low in 2015-16.

During the 2015-16 school year, the number of UW-Madison faculty being offered jobs from outside institutions was the highest the campus had seen compared to the preceding decade. The number of outside offers reached 144 in 2015-16 after hitting a record low of 70 job offers in 2013-14.

But despite record high recruitment rates of campus faculty, coupled with the concern many professors have expressed over their salaries, retention rates remained consistent. Of the 100 cases of UW-Madison staff being recruited by other institutions — many which offered them higher salaries — only 29 professors left.

The report also shows that UW-Madison increased its efforts to recruit faculty. The university made 175 job offers to prospective faculty and 105 accepted these positions in 2016-17, which is an increase from 99 job offers made in the prior school year.

This happened at the same time as changes in tenure policy were occurring, as well a $250 million budget cut to UW System institutions.

The 2016-17 summary report reveals that the number of campus faculty being recruited by other universities dropped back down to 92 offers — the lowest the institution has experienced since 2013.
